Incredible work. Really.

Do you have any work in progress shots you could share?

Hi Craig,

I have a few, not really that much to see. When I get to building something, I seldom take in "progress photos"...I just want to get the thing finished!

Karl,
Really nice modeling...that water tank is beautiful...
Individual plaster stones and oil washes on the wood ?
Thanks for sharing this build !
Tommy

Hi Tom, Nope, it's from a casting I made from a Bragdon stone wall mold. I cut the 8 walls and angled them to form the octagonal base for the tower. The tower was colored with Blick markers. Karl O

Karl, as always, fantastic work.  I really, really enjoy your dioramas. You turn out some of the finest model railroad diorama work I've seen.  For me, your subtle sense of humor and quirky eccentric character and scenes are what makes them special.

Looking forward to your next one (no pressure!).

Hi George, thanks. I try to have some yuks doing this stuff. Did you notice the top of the pine tree on the right side in the third photo? Seems like Napoleon was tossing ΒΌ" sticks of dynamite in the air for the 4th of July and blew the top off his tree. Also, Tim's employee fell off the back of the turnip truck moving some crates around. Poor fella'.

Scratchbuilding / Try again...

Howdy,

I haven't posted anything here in a very long time but I talk to my good buddy Karl Scholz (postalkarl) a lot and he suggested that  some folks here might want to see what I've built in the last several months. I don't do RRL forum any longer and Facebook confuses the hell out of me so, taking Karl's suggestion, we'll see what happens here! Thanks,

Cheers,

Hello,

I have built this kit twice and think it's really under-rated in the FSM library of kits. If you'd like to see my last build of this kit I have some photos of it. Cheers,

Karl O,
Fantastic work but it looks like a few of your pet rattlesnakes got loose.

And I am not volunteering for the job to round them up!

;D ;D :o

Hi Bruce,

Yep, they seem to getting out in that hole in the lid...that one guy is just about free! Good thing they sell the venom elixir at the camp store.

Dioramas / Finished...Cowboy Trading Post
December 07, 2019, 11:13:56 AM

Hello,

Haven't done much on forums for some time but I thought I'd give this a shot of a scratch build I just finished. It's from a 1930 photo of a trading post in Gripe, AZ. I guess Gripe doesn't even exist anymore as it was sucked up into nearby Safford, AZ, in Graham County.  It also had a border crossing inspection center that might still be there?? Anyway, here's my version.

Hello,

New model I've been working on...all the structures are scratch-builds and Rapinett Motors is still not finished.

Sunset at Horseshoe Meadows and a work train at Snake River station...

wow Karl, so nice!
next time you build a Jordan, please share your tips!  (like, what kind of glue do you use?)

Hi Bob,

I guess after building 300+ Jordan's over the years I think I've tried just about every solvent-type liquid cement out there.

I liked Ambroid and Tenax 7R the best but now that they both seem to have been discontinued I've gone to using straight up Methylene Chloride (same stuff as Ambroid)), Faller Super Expert and Tamiya Extra Thin Liquid Cement. I like The MethChlor best since it works the fastest and makes a very strong joint. Here's another one I finished a few weeks back. It's a Jordan Mack flatbed that I scratch-built into a garbage truck with styrene strips and sheets...

Kit Building / Re: Monster Model Works Freight House
March 04, 2019, 11:05:05 PM
Hello,

I've done quite a few of the Monster basswood brick walls and was very pleased with the way they looked after painting with craft acrylics and dry pigments. Here is an FSM structure that I used the Monster brick walls rather than the ones in the kit...

If you like this look, here is the link with how I did it:

PS - Here are a couple more with Monster brick walls colored the same way as the others...

Vehicle Modeling / Custom tow truck...
March 02, 2019, 10:53:37 AM

Hello,

I finished this truck a few days ago to use on another project I'm working on. The cab, chassis and wheels/tires are from a Jordan 1923 Ford kit and the rest is scratch-built from strip styrene and a few castings...

Cheers,
