Hal Reynolds and I were invited to the Lynn Museum one Saturday where I was given a chance to scan a folder of old train photos and came up with this amazing shot. Boston Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad 1875-1940 (Narrow Gauge) at the rear of the Market Street Station at Pleasant Street between Alley and Broad, now the rear entrance to Eastern Bank. A second station was located at the corner of Alley and Commercial streets, the current location of Lynn Lumber Co. The BRB&L RR serviced commuters from Lynn, Revere Beach and Winthrop to East Boston where they boarded a ferry to Rowes Wharf Boston. Engine 10 was Built by Mason Machine Works of Taunton, MA in 1887 and scraped in 1929. Known as a Mason Bogie Type 2-4-4T. A Lynn Museum Photo, Index Ref. (14.419.TR1).

If you come across any photos of the track-facing sides of GE River Works buildings 30, 41 and the USN Gear Works, please let me know.  I need to build them for my layout.

Hi Jim...I looked through my folder of GE photos and came up with this one. I found it in the engineering archives in building 64. This looks like a shot facing the Lynnway gas company tank in the distance. I don't see the Gear Plant, must be prior to it being built. Looks like the Boston and Maine to the right. I have several more of other locations throughout the plant.

Jim...Here is a link to the Essex County Registry of Deeds Atlas of Lynn 1924 of GE showing the rail system in the plant. Sounds like you worked there?

Thanks a lot, Doug.  That photo looks like it was taken from the SE corner of Buliding 31, and it's definitely pre-WWII.  I never worked there, but I know a bunch of people who did.   I've just ridden past it on B&M and MBTA trains for most of my life.

My B&M Eastern Route layout includes a compressed segment  of West Lynn from about the plant grade crossing to the Creamery.   I have Carpenter's "River Works" book and his maps cover the tracks & building numbers pretty well.  There's a track plan on this page of my progress thread:

James...Actually it was taken from the S/E corner of 41.  I just came from the archives room and found a few more 1920's shots from the ground and several 1953 Ariel photos. When I get a chance I'll scan them and post them to my site. I'll let you know when there up, you'll be able to click on the globe under my photo to the left to get to my site.
