Duffy's Coal #275 by FSM

I am back after some hiatus. Moving isn't fun as well as cabin crew strike. Yes, I got caught in this Lufhansa strike thing and had to extend my vacation by one day. I consider myself lucky. It could have been worse. The strike kept going for a few more days after I got back. I wish someone dug a tunnel under the Atlantic and ran a train. Steam preferably  :D
It seems that FOS Red Hook office will have to spend some time on the shelf before I get back to it. I have to give priority to the projects I have promised to build. I have been wanting to do a kit in all box car red for quite some time but haven't had a chance. Therefore I am painting my Duffy's in the exact way George did. I will be attaching everything to a piece of 1/2 inch plywood but won't do scenery. The trestle will go away but I will preserve the coal bins.
I have to mention that I don't follow order of construction set in the instructions. It will bite me in the behind at some point but if I did it would take me way much longer.

Hi Vilius,

I think Duffy's is my favorite kit and I remember having a lot of fun building it.  I'll be following along for sure!  It looks like you're off to a great start.   :D

Hey:

You are off to a good start. Love your coloring and weathering. Very nicely done.

Off to a good start Vilius, don't you just love it when the weather gets all wet and cold and everyone starts building things and share it with us.
I love photo's, don't we all.

I will also be following along - the colors look great.

Villius,
I like the colors enough to ask you what they are and how you did them, please.
One of my winter projects is Branchline's Crosby's Coal. It would look great in the color scheme you're using.
Working on my second million. I gave up on the first.

Nice job on the foundation coloring, and the rot at the bottom of the door.  👍

Nice job!  This is my favorite FSM kit.  I wish I still had my kit.  Maybe one day I will get another.

Thank you, everyone. This is how I paint the walls.
1. I apply a stain. Supposedly it is Driftwood replacement but I can't confirm since I haven't seen real Driftwood stain in my life. I got it from Sherwood-Williams and its formula is as follows.
Pickled White Base
B1 - 16
W1 - 20
Y3 - 11
Y1 - 2
It comes out a little thick so I dilute it with Mineral Spirits. I don't think exact formula is required. Some grayish stain would do it. It is possible that this step isn't needed but I believe the stain seals wood somewhat and helps in getting the look.
2. I apply A&I wash. I haven't done any comparison but it looks like ink mixes with paint  and tones it down a bit.
3. I paint the walls with a craft paint. The craft paint is the key. I apply it with a number 6 bristle brush in semi-drybrush way.
4. I glue on "painted" signs
5. I do nail holes and lift clapboards at this point.
6. If I feel that any of the "painted" signs pop too much I dry brush white oil paint over them.
7. I add bracing.
8. I apply oil wash made of turpenoid and black oil paint with a touch of brown.

If anyone is interested in getting Duffy's it may be the time. I got mine on eBay for a very good price at a time. Now it would be one of the highest...

Great start to a fabulous kit. Duffy's is my all time favorite FSM kit.

Keep the updates coming.

Thank you, Tom and Jaime.

I believe I started building Duffy's around the same time Karl started his Skinner's. He is done and I am only somewhere at mid point...

The scale house is supposed to have corrugated metal roof but I realized that only after I applied tarpaper. Instead of peeling it off I will glue metal on top.
