And my question:  When doing one of these deep city scenes, does he work from the rear forward, completing a back street and fully detailing it before moving closer to the front of the layout? 


(I guess the alternative would be to make some of the front structures removable so details could be added to those in the back.)

Like the previous question - I can answer for the town of Franklin because I discussed it with George.  He started by adding all the streets which sloped up to the backdrop that he had installed. He then started in the back and worked his way toward the front. If you look at the downs of Dovertown the large buildings in back are the backdrop and George has changed the structures in front many times over the years.
The front of the layout also has more of the FSM kits.  I hope this answers your question - if not let me know and I will ask George.
