Tom did you change the layout due to operational issues?  Better scenery?  Just to start over?

Jeff

Jeff,

Sorry for the late response to your question.

The layout was changed due to me adding an addition 14 feet to the north end of the room. At this point I was only thinking of more room and not operations or scenery.

As I mentioned to Jeff, I got permission from the City of Orlando, approving my permit, to enlarge the train room. I added  another 14 feet to the north end of the room.

I started removing the old, old layout sometime in February or march of 2009.

I removed all of the layout from Three Pine Junction and everything north of that location. This also included the farm area I just finished a few months prior to the old layout redo.

Three Pine Junction below.

In the photo below, you can see the lower track heading to the left of the photo. This track is the track that ran in front of the farm area.

Tom,
At the risk of sounding facetious, did that house on wheels finally roll onto the tracks above?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  KP-out...

ACL1504

I had a lot of cork roadbed glued to the Homosote but not ballasted. After removing the track, I used a sharp 1" wide wood chisel to remove the cork. The chisel slid under the cork and it was as smooth to remove as pulling up masking tape.

Of course the cork roadbed had glue and Homosote glued to it.

At the time my Babe was spending an extended vacation in Baltimore. Yes, I was all by my lonesome. I had the brilliant idea of soaking the cork in the bath tub. After about 30 minutes I used a fingernail brush to remove the wet glue and Homosote.

I then dried it all out in the sun. I figured I saved about two and a half boxes of cork. It was just as soft as if right out of the box new.

I wouldn't try it if the Babe was in town. We got rid of the tub and only have showers now anyway.

Thom,

Facetious, do you want to start a patois?

In answer, yes, it rolled from old farm and settled at the new farm.

Ha, I'll stipulate!

The last time I filled up my bathtub like that, I was testing how well my model war ships floated while in a bubble storm.  ???

ACL1504

In this next photo you can see where I've removed a very big portion of the old mountain.

The track in the lower portion of the photo was redirected from the two tracks that ran above the farm area.

Two tracks above the farm area redirected to the new location above.

Thom,

I remember those days very well. Only I had yellow duckies. Oh wait, I had a red submarine that was powered with backing soda.

Ha, yes I remember those, I think mine were either pressed into a pill form or we used alka seltzer.  ;)

In this next photo you can see where the lower track was redirected to run under the mountain. The turnout in the bottom of the  picture will be explained later. The track at the turnout was the old track running in front of the old farm area.

You can also see where I've started to renew the old mountain.

The end of the elevated roadway was back from the edge of the layout  some 5 feet. So, I used an "N" scale portal for perspective.

That is all for today on this thread.

I just got caught up on this thread - very interesting to see what you took out. I recently found a bunch of pictures of my old layout - I need to put a throw back Thursday thread on my to-do list. My pictures are the only fashion printed on photographic paper so I will have to scan them.

John,

Thanks for checking in. I forgot all  about this thread. I need to keep it going.

Its interesting to me as well to go back and see the old layout. It was nice but definitely needed to go.
