I did in fact learn the word from Mr. O'Reilly's show. Although I understand why he was fired, I still miss the show.

Webster's definition of PATOIS is some what misleading. But for you and me it simply implies we have a common language spoken between those with a common interest.

I scratch built one on my old, old layout and then re-engineered it into a coal dump ramp.

Here is the one from the old, old layout.




This new one won't be as high as the old one.

Here is the old wood vehicle bridge I re-engineered into a coal dump ramp.

The coal dump was used on my old layout, the one prior to this current and last one.

I started by using four posts/bents just a little narrower than the area between the fence posts. I glued a top cap to the four posts.



I added one horizontal brace at the bottom and two traverse braces on each side.

I removed some scenery from the base so it would fit flush on the plywood base.

After building one, I placed it on the layout to make sure it was the correct height even though I previously measured the height.



The bridge is a very simple design but effective. Did I ever mention level is good?

Satisfied with this one, I built the other one.

I made sure the locos and cars would fit under and through the bridge.

I forgot to mention one important fact.

Reading Bob made me a gift of one of those fancy A&I staining tubes. I got to use it to stain the HO scale wood used in this bridge build.



I'm not showing the actual staining bath process as it has been shown and discussed on many other threads. Shakespeare's Hamlet said, "Brevity is the soul of wit". So, no extra narrative on staining the wood. 8) 8) 8)


I will add the stain was Hunterline Medium Brown A&I.

Thank you, much appreciated. Truth be known, I was so impressed with George's wooden planked bridge, I used it as my inspiration for the one in this picture.



No mistaking this one for the very fine one on George's layout.

The columns/bents on the bridge are HO scale 10X10s, the bracing used are 2X6's and the cap is also scale 10X10 lumber.

I used scale 8X8's for the common bridge spans which will support the decking.

Here I used two 8X8's to align the bridge supports with the fence posts.



My level bubble is not dead center but it is within the lines. I can and will live with this.

You can see the bridge support structure is slightly off center from each other. It will be a little tricksie in aligning the decking but not impossible.

I used a weight to hold the two supports in place while I marked the location on the plywood.



After marking the location, I tacked the supports in place. As the glue dried I made sure they were set at 90 degrees to the track. Once the glue was dry,  I added the common deck supports and glued them to the caps over the four bents. I let this dry over night.

I made one final test to ensure it all was correctly aligned.



The next day I made sure it was all square and nothing shifted during the night.


Did I ever mention level is a good sign things are done correctly. No corners were cut or abused in the making of this bridge. 8) 8)

I used a #17 Xacto blade to slip under the outside bents and cut through the "tacked" glue.



Once removed from the layout, I placed the bridge on the workbench. I used the angle weights from Micro Mark and again made sure the supports and top caps were all at a 90 degree angle.

It was only slightly out of square. I added a little more glue to the underside and reset the angles. You can see the fresh glue on the underside. When dry the glue won't be seen from the top.



I used two small Irwin Quick Grips to hold the supports against the weights. No picture here, I forgot to take one.

I'll have an update on the bridge in a couple of days.
