New rolling stock for the Empire

Recently I had upgraded a gondola with a ITLA wood floor.  I bought a similar floor for a CB&Q Proto 2000 kit.  I built the kit and installed the floor.  It's pictured with the Rapido car I did last week.

On the Rapido car thread, Reading Bob mentioned I should weather the car up.  I told him I wasn't brave enough to do it with the airbrush.  I built an Accurail box car and a Intermountain gondola as well.  Putting the grabs on the gondola was a PITA.    There were several small glue globs visible.  Rather than just shoot some Dullcoat, I decided to get out my Pan Pastels to try and weather it.  I had a Great Northern gondola I had used the Pan Pastel black on for a photo shoot when we built the Yehuda's heating kit.  Has it really been that long ago?    I had only weathered one half of one side of the kit for the photo.  I decided to weather it the rest of the way today.  The flash makes it look "patchier" than it does in person.

I weathered up the new gondola using only four colors.  I initially stained the inside wood with some Hunterline light grey.  Compared to the Pennsy gondola, I think it looks pretty good.  The car has no weight, so will probably have to have a permanent load.  The first 3/4 view is with flash, the second without.  The true look is closer to the second.

Finally the Accurail car.  I sprayed them with some flat fixative to make sure I wouldn't remove the weathering with handling.  I only knocked off one grab on the C&NW car while weathering it.  These aren't great weathering jobs, but they look better than factory fresh and only took about 10 to 15 minutes per car.  Maybe I don't need to learn how to use the airbrush after all.

That's certainly better than any freight car weathering I've done so far Dr. Jeff.  But I haven't exactly set the bar very high (there's a reason I've never posted pictures of my attempts here) so you may mistakenly take that as an insult.       But please don't.  These look very nice!
