On this year's Raymo Challenge, I used an airbrush on the model.  I haven't had great results in the past, but this build helped my confidence, so I figured I'd do some of Raymo's favorite items next--Sylvan vehicles.  I've ruined a couple in the past with poor airbrushing, but no blotching/running this time.   :)  These aren't up to Raymo standards, but they're good enough for The Empire.

First a 1947 Kaiser.

Finally my first real truck.  A 48-53 Chevy COE with a Grain body.  I didn't want to try to paint the inside of the grain body, so I made a styrofoam "grain load" and a tarp.  Used EZ line for the hold down "ropes".
These were quite a challenge, especially the silver trim, used two different silver "pens" for that.  The "Detailer" wash really helped with the grilles.  Thanks again to Raymo for his posted past builds so I could turn these out!

Jeff,

Very nice job on the vehicles. I really like that you have included the license plates. An often overlooked item. It really lends credence to the scene..

I know that most people are going to cringe when I mention rattle cans for painting the vehicles, but I have had a lot of success with them. By them, I mean picking the right colors and more importantly, the right manufacturer of pigment. I have reached across the aisle to the airplane section and have been purchasing Tamiya colors. I find that the pigment is very finely ground giving you a very smooth finish. I still have some ModelMaster rattle cans, but i use them sparingly. Their colors are good, but the pigments are not as finely ground as Tamiya. I prime all my cars with - wait for this - Walmart Home Shades primer. Its cheap and it works great. Just thought you might want to try it.

Thanks, guys.  Frank, I primed these with Rust Oleum camo black.  I was worried the red would be too bright, and the black undercoat gave them just the color I wanted.

Jeff,

I agree with all others in you did a fantastic job on the Sylvans. They look like Raymo vehicles to me.

Jeff, I just came upon this post and I got to say, Great Job! I like the colors you used, and the tarp on the grain truck..

Thanks, Dan.  Your DVD, clinics and builds you've posted here really helped.

Jeff,
Well done. This is something that has not been tried here...building those resin Sylvan & Sheepscot truck & vehicle kits...that add a lot to a model RR.
Like the colors and your clean modeling of these builds. Made me watch the BEST DVD ( Bollinger Edgerly Scale Trains ) , Building in Miniature last night.
Made a note of that Detailer Wash that Dan Raymond uses in his work...have to pick that stuff up...and maybe a few of these kits too.
