No need to reinvent the wheel so I'll show you the steps I used to make several rafter tails in a short time.

The pictures I'm showing below are from the build I did for Jimmy on the first Boilermakers kit. That build thread was done back in 2011. The rafter tail section starts on page 24.

https://www.kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5203

I first make a master rafter tail making sure it fits against the structure and the angle is correct on the drip edge of the roof.

I then take the master and lay it on the stock 2X6, 2X4 or water ever size you are working with.

More in a few.

I hold the master on the stock and make the other angle cut. For clarity, I'm not showing me holding the master against the stock.

Repeat this process for making as many rafter tails as needed. This is very quick and accurate.

Master rafter tail on top and second on bottom.

I also decided to add a front screen door. I got a roll of ribbon material from Joann's Fabrics that looks like HO scale screen.

I glued a Vector Cut (no longer in business) door to the ribbon.

The ribbon was trimmed from the edges of the door and then the door was glued in place.

To the right of the door, you can also see the Vector Cut window fan I added.

I found some very old Rock Quarry roofing material in my roofing material box. It was a little brittle so I used it anyway and carefully.

The paper had a slight texture like tar paper on one side.

I cut strips for the rolled roofing paper and fast forward it was all glued in place.

I then used a soft brush and "painted" on Natural Grey PanPastel as shown. I used the lip on the bottom of each row as a guide.

I then randomly added a little Paynes Grey.

I used a 1 inch wide soft brush and lightly pulled the pastels down from top to the valley.

I added a little Burnt Sienna PanPastel and used the 1 inch brush to blend it all together.

As you can see, the small chimney and vent stack were also added.

A small awning was added over the bay doors. I still need to add the lighting. For now the structure is finished except for placing it on the layout.

Here is where it will be placed.

Also note the roof weathering and appearance is much more subtle in the two photos below.

I'll add the lighting and show those pictures with that task is completed.

Of course the scenery will be changed for the location as well.

Dave,

Thank you. When I added the burnt sienna to the pastels on the roof I wasn't sure I did the right thing. However, I got lucky and it all blended very well.
