Hi folks,

Do you ever get something in your head and can't let it go? I have wondered for some time now why old factory windows have painted or stained glass panes. Why are only some colored? Is it just replacement over time. I have searched rather extensively tonight and can not find the answer.

Thanks

Keep It Rusty

I believe it was two reasons.

One, it way to control the amount of natural light on the shop floor.

Second, it was a simple way to "beautify" an otherwise ugly building!

Thanks. I thought it might be something like that or to keep workers from looking out the windows.

A couple added points:

Painted glass, particularly on industrial and factory buildings would have been added for several reasons:

  • Privacy, to keep prying eyes from seeing into the structure.
  • To limit sun glare within the structure.
  • To limit heat gain inside of the structure.
Stained or multicolored, but translucent glass is likely caused by different colors of replacement glass. Depending on the different chemical composition of the glass, it may appear tinted in different colors, including green, amber, purple and blue.
