Larry,

Been following your machine shop build, aslo Dave's machine shop build.

Have you ever watched this guys video's? I think he has a residence here in the middle of New York state somewhere. He goes to Florida in the winter. he hasn't posted in over a year. makes mewonder if he is still around. His workshop is totaly steam powered with overhead belt system. Might be of interest to you and Dave. Probably a little late in posting this since both of you are almost done with your projects.

Ya, but think of all the interesting things you'll learn that you never knew about. It'll give you a look at turn of the century small machine shop work and help setup your next machine build with all that information.

A scotch on ice should help while watching.  ;)

Ugh, I would never put good Scotch on ice.   >:(

But I have learned some interesting things watching machine shop videos, about how to think about projects and how to set up work (machine or manual.)

@ Larry,

You're welcome. I figure it's hard to set up a shop like your're building if you lack knowledge of excatly what goes on inside and how it's setup.

@ Dave,

I don't drink Sctoch so wouldn't know. I do drink some brandy though and no ice.  ;)

Seeing both you and Larry building a shop and some of the struggels in belt placement and machine placement I figured this would be the best video to watch since in a few of his videos he shows how everyhting is setup and why.

Now enjoy your scotch tall and watch the videos.  ;)  ;D

Larry, the boiler does look like it's been sitting outside for a while.
Nice weathering.

Rick thank you.

Anything to help understand what's involved in a subject that I am familiar with. If it helps great, if not, nothing lost.

Glad you liked it.

Now that I'm done with the Challenge build, it's time to get back to Hank's Shop:

IMG_M0089.jpg

Just before I had set this build aside Pennman (Rich) had mentioned extending the back tube that hides the lighting wire on top of the roof for the potbellied stove chimney. Liking his suggestion, thanks Rich, I added the extra piece to the roof top. Since the straw didn't give me any area for gluing I shoved a short piece of 8x8 lumber up inside the straw which gave me plenty of gluing surface. After that dried I mixed up some white glue & black paint which was added to the base and roof for tar. It lined up pretty well when finished.

IMG_M0090.jpg

Here's a side shot of the Chimney and yup it lined up well. The steam piping was tricky. The place I usually buy pipe and fittings doesn't sell them any more. I decided to use a length of #24 gauge wire with the casing left on for the piping. After careful measuring and bending I had my piping for the boiler and steam engine. For the joints I cut some very narrow pieces of masking tape and applied where I wanted the fittings with tweezers; a bit fiddly but it worked. After that the assembly was spray painted flat black then weathered some. Then I was able to glue the pipes into the boiler and steam engine. I also added a slightly rusted tub with coal and a shovel leaning against the side wall; of course I had to add some coal to the cement slab as well.

IMG_M0091.jpg

Here's a closeup of the area. I'll add a few more details to that are after the scenery material is applied.

IMG_M0092.jpg

I wanted the control lever of the steam engine facing the front of the diorama but the pulleys wouldn't line up with the drive shaft and since there was the shaft coming out of the other side of the engine I decided to add another pulley which would line up properly. I used 2 large HO pulley's that I had acquired and soaked them in blackening then buffed them before weathering. Both pulleys were glued to the shaft so now I can use a wider belt plus the 3D printed pulley on the right wouldn't allow the belt to go under the pulley.

That's pretty much it for now. Thanks for stopping by for a gander and for all your gear comments and/or suggestions. Stay tuned.

Jerry, Curt, MJ, and Ron thank you all so much for your compliments. When I saw that steam engine a few months back I knew I had to use it on this build because it was so unique; I've never seen anything like that before.
