I hope this qualifies for signage.

I made this land navigation marker for my layout.

I don't recall seeing that type in New England, do you know its meaning?

James. It is modelled after one in the Maritimes. Sometimes they are on the side of a building or standing alone. Two are involved: one on land and one in the water, but I do not model the one in the water, as the water is the aisle where I stand in; in front of the layout.

Lining up two markers (one in front of the other while out on a boat on the water) to stay on a specific course is a technique known as a Range This is one of the most accurate ways to maintain a straight path through a narrow channel or toward a safe harbor.

If the front marker is to the right of the rear one - the one on my layout, you are to the left of the safe line. If the front marker is to the left of the rear one, you are to the right of the safe line.

Thanks. Newburyport had range lights maintained by the US Coast Guard until 1961.  I've been planning to model the Rear Range Light but your response led me to look farther: The Front Range Light still stands, though lighthouse-index.com gives a height which isn't consistent with their picture.  jimbobslighthouses.blogspot.com has a pre-fire picture and a focal plane height which seems more realistic.

Taking the Pictured Rocks boat tour last summer we saw the range lights returning to Munising.  Not like the one shown there was a light up on the hill 1/4 mile or more from shore and one near shore that a mariner would line up to follow a safe passage to the docking area.  There are similar light sets at different ports I have seen in travels around the UP.

More info than I expected to see...   https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Range+lights+or+markers+navigation&t=newext&atb=v344-1&ia=web

PAge 13 of this document shows very similar markers to above.  https://uscgboating.org/images/486.PDF
