I've got one side of the roof shingled.  Just used stiff grey card strips 8mm high and randomly cut each shingle through about 4mm with scissors.  The rest is then overlapped by the next strip.
I also cut some individual shingles on an angle, or a bit shorter and snip out bits to give it a random/rustic look.
Still to be painted.

Also got the decking done so I know how far out the awning sections will be before I do the shingles on that and the roof on the other side.
Used stir sticks for the decking, cut the width in half to represent narrower boards.

Rob,

I like those shingles. The overall
cabin looks just rustic enough for me.

Rob, If you are going for "rustic", I think you nailed it.  The shingles look great.

Thanks Rick, Rich, Mike and Ron.  It's how I've always done my shingles, and they always turn out nice once painted & weathered.

I've now added the left side awning.
Shingled it first on the flat workbench, added the two posts to the deck, then attached the awning to the building.
Then added the rafters underneath using some basswood strips.
At this point I've added the windows & doors also, as they would be hard to fit later. They are painted in a muted red, to give the cabin some colour, but not look garish.

Now I can finish off the rest of the shingles.

Very nice.
Hard to tell in the pictures, are the shingles on the awning painted or weathered?
Also, where do you get the mat board?

robert goslin

Hi Rick.  No, none of the shingles are painted as yet.  That's just the grey card colour.

What I'm calling mat board, here it is also called box board.  It's 1800 gsm /  2.5mm thick.
I get the box board from a big box stationery supply store here called Office Works.

I thinks proper mat board, which I also sometimes use, is what framers use around paintings & photos and is only about 1mm thick.  I get offcuts of this from a mate of mine, whom I'm guessing gets it from a picture framer.
