Title: The Pennsy - Six Miles West of Altoona and More
Post by: ACL1504 on March 18, 2014, 07:39:09 PM
Tis I, the ACL purple guy! I'd like to share with you a tour of my good friends Bill and Kris Cutler's layout. The layout was started some four yeares ago and the progress has been amazing to say the least. They have done more work on the layout than I have on my A&S over the past ten years. Many of you know my AS from the traveling frieght car on the other forum. Yes, my AS has been all over the place.

Back to Bill and Kris' Pennsy. It's a six level four track mainline of six miles West of Altoona including, Horseshoe Curve, Tunnel Hill, Glittzin(sp) and other surrounding areas. Like all of us, they had to be selective in the compression of the area. We have a good friend, Jon Shubert, who helped in the design of the layout.

I asked Bill if I could share his layout with ya'll in hopes that he and his lovely wife, Kris, will join the forum and respond to any comments or questions you may have.

I'll start you off with a few photos of their layout. Currently they are well into the scenery building of the layout. Bill maybe the builder, but make no mistake, Kris is the CEO of the scenery!

Greg,

Thanks for checking in! This layout sure has changed since you saw it last! My guess is that the scenery is about 70-75% finished. That is if anything on a layout can be finished.

This next photo is of Kris using her Topside Creeper to add more scenery! I just noticed something about this picture. Do you see the light blue framed mirror in the right of the photo? I wonder if this helps her see when Bill is sneaking up on her?

It looks like Kris is trying to hide from Bill in this photo. Maybe she is adding the ground goop to the backside of the mountain.

Tom, the goop Kris is using is Fusion Fiber by True Scene Modeling. She loves how she can change the texture to do just about any thing she wants including tossing some at me if my suggestions do not agree with hers!

Bill,

I just couldn't remember the name of the stuff Kris uses for her scenery! I still have the sample you and Kris gave me so I'll have to give it a try. I like how you can rewet it and move it around.

I mentioned at the start of the thread "to make no mistake" Kris was the CEO of the scenery! I can't wait to show the rest of the photos to the members of the forum! It sure looks good.

That layout looks like it will keep the helpers busy.  It appears they're using cork roadbed on 1/2" plywood with a minimum radius of 30" or greater?
Title: Re: The Pennsy - Six Miles West of Altoona and More
Post by: PennsyJ1 on March 27, 2014, 04:44:50 AM
James you are correct on all accounts Kris and I have been very busy the last 3 years working on the layout. I feel very lucky that she has really taken to the hobby.  You are correct on the materials used and the radius of 30" is the tightest of all the curves.

Welcome to the forum Bill,

I'd keep an eye on Tom and Greg if I were you.  There's no telling what trouble those two are going to get into.   ;D

Love the pictures of the layout.  I certainly look forward to seeing more.  I did a trip to Altoona and Cresson with a club I belonged to back when I lived in PA.  You and Kris are certainly well on you way to capturing the feeling of the area.  What a great area to for watching trains.

Thanks Bob. We are relatively rookies at this compared to the rest of the folks on the forum. The work people have done is amazing. We have already learned some things by looking over the site. We started with a very small layout and enjoyed the work and the history so Kris said why don't we convert the game room in to a RR room. How lucky can one get, I am sure that does not happen that often  ;D

Great. Hope we get an SBG field trip in the works!

I thought the same thing when I saw the first few pictures - looks like a slot car track I had when I was a kid. I think I'm showing my age - do slot car tracks still exist?   This is turning into a first class layout - great work!

But Kris gets a few extra for joinin' in the fun and leanin' over the layout!   8) 8) 8)

Tom, the first few photos are of the Bennington Curve and MG tower area, Tunnel Hill Glallitzin Pa. We have done more work at Horseshoe but we still have a ways to go on that scene. I guess the saying " you are never done in this hobby" is true!
Thanks to every one for the positive words about what we have do so far, it is very encouraging.  :)

John,

Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment. Yes, it did look like a slot car track and that is one of the reasons I waited a few weeks to get to most of the scenery pictures. I was fishing with ya'll, especially with Gman, you know like reeling everyone in!

Funny you should mention the SBG field trip! I was talking to Bill yesterday afternoon about the SBG's coming up for a visit. I'm going to try to plan it within the next four weeks.

Frank,

Thanks for stopping by! Kris really got involved in the scenery part of the layout. I think it's funny that she won't let Bill do any scenery and when he does it is certainly under her very watchful eye!  ;D ;D ;D ;D Yes, she does have talent but if we sign her up for the SBG what are we gong to do with her Bill? Ha, just kidding.

Yes, I have more pictures. I'll get them up later.

Greg we are so glad you brought Pegi with you this time, we hope she had a good time.  Thanks for your help with the IrfanView program, now... if I can remember what you did I will be posting some photos soon.
Thanks to all for stopping by, really enjoyed the time!!!

Hi Bill.....Pegi and I had a wonderful time during our visit, thanks for having us.

The progress you and Kris have made is amazing, I really like those big tree trunks y'all are doing, they really knock the realism up a notch!

You're welcome for the help with Irfanview, if you have any questions, give me a call. However, the windows 8 operating system you have is really a pain, I will definitely stick with 7.

See y'all next time!

Here are a few shots I took on Bill and Kris' Pennsey layout.

That's Pegi in the middle of the track and Bob back at Horseshoe Curve.

This shot is at the top of the layout. The tower replicates the real one, but I can't remember what Bill told us it was.

Here is a neat scene with an arc welder in the brick shop building.

Looks like everyone had a great time. I was thinking the other day that Bill and Kris really had no idea what they were getting into when I suggested to them to join the forum and let me profile their Pennsy!

That will teach them to listen to me!

I guess they are becoming part of the SBG (Saturday Butty Group)!

Bob,

I stopped by the Pennsy this morning and the location for Aunt Ruth's House is perfect!  Bill and Kris are doing a little urban renewal in that area and the end result will be one of manyh focal points on the layout! Here is that area!

I happen to be on the hill looking down Cresson Cut and saw an ABA unit pulling an oil train. I walked down onto the tracks to get a closer look and was run off by the Pennsy Police! So, back on the hill I went! It was good I scrammed as the engineer turned on the headlight indicating he was under way.

The next three photos are of AR Tower on the Real Pennsy! This view is looking up from the Rat Hole! All trains were required to stop at AR Tower for a brake test. It was all down hill from this point on!

I see Jon Shubert standing by his red corvette and taking more pictures of AR Tower.

Grandma's house is just up and to the right of Cresson Cut! This is a great little scene and I see grandma still has her little woody in the driveway! Maybe it was gramdpa's woody?

Looks like their barn on the right needs a few repairs! I see "Old Blue" laying on the front porch just waiting for the repair guy in the truck to brave the walk!

I wonder if Bill and Kris have any Pennsy locomotives?

Tom, when you stopped by the other day I forgot to give you the info on the distressed looking trees we have added to the layout. We got them from Timberline Scenery. I believe they are Montana sage material. We found if you let them soak in 60/40 Matte Medium for 1/2hr the tree darkens more and the texture of the bark stands out a little better. Some trees we leave as dead looking. The others I take the broken pieces of the supper trees and glue them on some of the branches. Some have more some have less depending on the look you are going for. Kris will then paint the supper tree portion brown with some black and then add the Noch leaf flake colors. I hope this helps.

The BLI H10's finally showed today. They have some nice detail to them and run clean so far. To be safe I don't think I will try them on Tom's ovalix, strange things happen down there in O town. The H10's are double headed thru Bennington Curve on the way to the Gallitzin tunnels.

You are one funny guy there Cutler! My ovalix is only 1% grade. Can I help it if a BLI diesel burns out on the 8th loop? No siree, not me or my strange looking ovalix! Now, I would understand if it burned on the spot. I gave Reading Bob plenty of opportunities that day to say it was a motor burn. He, however, insisted it was a short caused by faulty manufacturing.

Tom ;D

PS: It did smell burned to me and I know what burn smells like.!

I just wanted to share the final resting place for Tom's structure SRMW Currier and Sons Cabinet Makers which is now known as Langford wood. I told Tom what I was looking for in this area, and he came though with the structures. I wanted the area to look like a working scene and Kris added some grasses and weeds which enhances the area. Kris and I have learned a lot since joining the forum. We want to thank everyone for sharing their ideas and techniques which helps us all benefit in this wonderful hobby.
Here are a few pictures of where we are so far in this area.

Thanks for the great comments John. That bridge in the back round is a copy from a photo from the late 30's early 40's at Gallitzin Pa.

Yesterday Kris and Bill Cutler had the Saturday Butty Group over to view the new additions to the Pennsy! Kris had the house, er, I mean home decorated for Christmas. Breakfast snacks were also available. As Reading Bob mentioned on the morning thread they were very gracious hosts.

Kris has been busy planting new trees around Horseshoe Curve.

We even had a real derailment. I believe the Judge was at the throttle. You see, I can blame it all on the Judge as he isn't a member of the forum. He said he didn't know what to say! Well, speak up or get the blame your Honor.

The two houses in the middle of the photo are CCK kits by Jeff Grove. Reading Bob built these for the Pennsy. Just when I was taking the picture, the Judge popped up. Yes, it's his fault once again.

Bill installed working marker lights on the rear of his Cabeese. This really adds realism to the trains.

Here's another favorite scene of mine on the Pennsy. The Langford Lumber Co. is very busy place these days. Modesty prevents me from bloviating as to who may have built Langford Lumber.

The green house with the light tan/buff trim in the right rear is also a CCK kit by Jeff Grove.  It's "Aunt Ruth's House" if I recall correctly.  Groovy makes some really neat little houses.   :D

I understand that the F&SM hopper, #838075, will be visiting the Famous Pennsy, Six Miles West of Altoona and more layout.

The hopper is now on the home tracks of the Atlantic and Southern RR.

It appears Jose has found his normal resting spot or is he just waiting for the next freight train north?

I'm going to do a crossover on The Pennsy of the F&SM hopper.

The sun was pokiing it's shinny head through the Pennsylvania woods. Three men, all of whom have no desire to work, were up early. At least one of them was excited. Clem was poking the fire with a long branch being as he was to lazy to even stand.  Slim had his head in his hands and leaned back on his log pillow. You see, Slim decided that poking the log to get the fire going was to much like work. On the other hand, the most excited of the three was Jim. He was standing by the fire banging out a tune on his banjo.

He was singing, "Tis comin round da mountin, here tis come. Tis comin round da mountin, here tis come. F&SM hopper tis comin round da mountin, comin round da mountin, here tis come." Clem said, "Be quiet Jim, ya want the local PoPo to eared ya and took usin in?" Jim replied, "I's ain't worried, nary one bit cause I'd eared the F&SM hopper is comin round da mountin. I just gots to see its."

In the mean time, the famous F&SM hopper was spotted on a siding behind Langford Wood, also known for selling high quality lumber and roofing materials.

What this photographer finds interesting is the fact Langford and his Babe aren't waving at the hopper. And by the way, where is Jose. I expected to find him in the woods with the other three non workers. You see they all have in common that everyday is Saturday.

The hopper was sent to the Pennsy, Six Miles West of Altoona, PA by the Atlantic and Southern RR. There is certainly no telling how long the hopper will stay behind the lumber company.

At some point during the day, the hopper was moved to the coaling tower to drop the coal. Here a Pennsy H10 consolidation pushes the hopper back to the coaling tower.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171556.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171556.jpeg)

The brakeman is attempting to get the attention of the coal tower operator to verify the coal is to be dropped here.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171609.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616171609.jpeg)

Horace, the angry coaling tower supervisor, is waving his arms saying, " The hopper is empty you idiot, get it out of here, can't you see I've got huge Pennsy locos to service."

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616183226.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-200616183226.jpeg)

The hopper was then spotted next to the huge Pennsy T1- duplex.

Look at those massive M1 mountains double heading up the grade. They are pulling a long coal train up the Gallitzin Grade. I wonder if the hopper is in this train?

It appears the Pennsy recognized the famous freight car and place it directly behind the Pennsy M1s.

WOW, lookie here, the hopper is now seen behind the Langford Wood and Lumber Yard. Who is that guy anyway? Don't tell me he is the guy with the Babe that waves at the F&SM hopper.

Here we are at AR Tower. All Pennsy trains must stop here to perform a brake test before going down the Rat Hole.

Hey, it that an express ACL reefer in the train? Yep, sure nuff.

But where is the F&SM hopper? Oh, there it is behind the Pennsy Shark B unit.

The hopper is now well past Altoona and passing Kattanning Point headed for the very famous Horse Shoe Curve.

How lucky are we? Its a fly over Horse Shoe Curve. We see the F&SM hopper on track 4 behind three Pennsy freight units.

A Pennsy passenger train is passing in the opposite direction on track 2 being pulled by two Tuscan Pennsy PA units.

And there is the wonderful Pennsy K4 Pacific # 1361.

After visits and many discussions on SCALE with ACL Tom, and watching the great job you all do with building structures I decided to give it a try. To insure that I was serious about this venture I gave away 10 or so buildings. There are now  a lot of empty lots on the layout. It's time to get started.
The HO SCALE INVESTMENT COMPANY purchased the under scale gas station property near Gallitzin Pa. A major excavation was needed to make way for the new gas station by Fos Scale Models. This is my version of Tower Gas. Kris worked on the scenery and we both worked on the details.

I think I have the bug to do more. Empty lots on the layout do not look good.

Bill and Kris,

Great job on the entire scene. The scenery looks as if it has been there forever. I really like the blend of color in the trees - looks very natural.

The FOS tower gas looks better without the witches hat on the building cupola. Nice job on the structure. The junk cars give the scene a touch of realism.

Well done Butties.

Well it is time to add some more character to the Pennsy. My good friend and Pennsy Railroad expert Jon Schubert, have decided to add some signal bridges to the layout, which should amount to 13 signal bridges. I purchased the signal bridges from Oregon Rail Supply (very nice people ) and circuit boards and LEDs. Jon asked if he could take on the task of assembling the bridges. I don't think he knew what he was getting into. Most of the bridges had to be modified in width to give us clearances needed. This entailed disassembling the girder section and adding new panels as needed. When a signal bridge was in the interlocking area 2 targets were used for each track, a upper and lower target. This gave the engineer the correct info to operate. Each target head has 5 magnet wires running from it to a terminal strip under the layout. In this case 20 wires per bridge was needed, a lot of tiny soldering points. Some bridges will be hard wired, and others are activated by a tortoise machine until the day comes for setting up blocks etc. At least for know a little splash of color and character. This morning when I walked into the layout room the sun was coming thru the open sliders so I snapped a few photo's to share.

What kind of terminal strips are you using for the magnet wire?  I've been using euro-style strips for my own signals (here: http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45342) because I don't need to crimp a lug onto the end of every wire.  However,  they are not good at grasping even #30 wire.

I've used IC sockets to make some of my signals removable, but they don't have enough pins for multiple PRR-style heads on a bridge.

James thanks for taking a look. I used a 5 position terminal bock I ordered from Amazon. I have attached the link below. We used one block for each head. The magnet wire slips into the connector and then tightens down with a screw driver. Each connector measures 2 1/2 X 7/8 inches. The plastic cover helps protect the magnet wire. I hope this helps.

Bill and Kris,

I really enjoyed my visit this afternoon. Better yet, Pam says thanks for baby sitting me while she was taking care of business.

Your layout is looking fantastic and the new structures are changing the entire look of the upper area.

Kris has become quite the arborist and it shows in all the new trees and forests.

The new signaling system is wonderful and this alone has drastically changed the layout for the better.

Keep up the great work my friends!

Today the Judge and I had an opportunity to visit Bill and Kris Cutler's Pennsy layout. We specially wanted to see the new signaling system they are installing.

A very good friend of ours, Jon Schubert, is helping. By helping, I mean Jon had kit bashed the signal bridges to fit the four track mainline. He is using the signal heads used by the Pennsy and I  believe I understood that each bridge had no less than 50 small (magnet wires) coming from the signals.

Jon is all things Pennsy as he grew up in that area and knows it extremely well. I'd like to add that the Judge and I have been using Jon to install our TCS WOW decoders. He is an expert with the Digitraxx DCC system so he is the kind of friend you want to keep happy!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway, when I got to the Cutler's this morning, I found Jon leaning over the layout checking the signals and turnout numbers to make sure the signals were working in relation the correct turnout.

Jon is our signal maintainer.

Well heck, last but not least is our good friend the Judge who loves all things railroad related.

He was unfortunate in that he was at the throttle when a major derailment occurred and tied up traffic for over an hour on the Pennsy.  Lord only knows how much revenue was lost due to his being at the throttle.

The signals are amazing.   :D  8)  They certainly give the layout a real Pennsy feel (not that it didn't already have it   ;) ).  I hope to get up to see them in person one of these days.

I'm sure you're well aware that the EXPO is being held in Altoona in November.  I think I'm going to go.  I'd like to visit the Horseshoe Curve and some of the other rail fan hot spots around the area.  It's been close to twenty years since my last visit.

I was visiting Bill and Kris Cutler and we have been doing quite a bit of bartering lately. I build a structure for the Pennsy and Kris builds me some of her wonderful trees.

There is an area on the Pennsy where they have the Ed Fulasz three story apartment. I mentioned on one of my visits that the area needed a front side walk and lamp posts. This was before I started making the brass lamp posts. I told Bill this would be a great start for lighting some areas of the layout.

He graciously agreed to let me experiment with this one block area. I forgot to take a picture of the area so I'll just promise to get one on the next visit.

This area is about 9 X 10 inches.

The photo below shows the two pieces of Masonite used as the base.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170249.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170249.jpeg)

The two pieces are slightly offset to fit the area. I glued the two pieces together and you can see the offset in the next photo.

Bill had some Bar Mills sidewalks he was going to use. I didn't care much for them as they were a paper product and told Bill I'd make the sidewalks out of strip wood.

I found a piece in my strip wood stash. I can't tell you the original length but it is an HO scale 5 1/2 ft wide and 6 HO scale ft. thick, meaning it is 3/4 inch wide and 1/16 inch thick.

I cut a piece 9 inches long. I cut a curb line in on one side about 3 HO scale inches wide.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170318.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170318.jpeg)

I cut two pieces and made a driveway for one vehicle.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170331.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170331.jpeg)

I glued these three pieces to the Masonite and let dry overnight.

After the glue dried, I cut expansion joint lines in every HO scale 5 feet. I sanded the driveway curb and sidewalk area to be flush with the road.

I wanted the walkways from the front sidewalk to be old and broken. I remembered I made a rubber mold from one of the FSM kits of such a sidewalk. Don't remember what kit they came from but it was at least 16+ years ago I made the mold.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170345.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-080318170345.jpeg)

I mixed the two part resin in paper cups, stirred the mix and poured it into the mold.

I then glued the broken sidewalks in place and when dry painted them with Floquil Aged Concrete.

I'll weather the sidewalks and driveway with A&I and Pan Pastels.

The black cut out is the shape and size of the apartment building.

Where they are now, you'd never hit them while opening a car door while parked near the curb. That's where they are in real life. Right where you don't want/need them.

Chip,

Yes, it is possible and they will be moved. I just had them sitting in place. I like the idea of cars getting dinged. High curbs are another thing that gets me going. You open the car door and "bang", where the hell did the curb come from.

Appreciate the input.

I assembled a few posts and painted them with Floquil Brunswick Green. When dry, I sprayed a coat of Scalecoat Semi-Gloss on the posts and set aside to dry.

Two of these will go on the street block for Bill and Kris and four are for Reading Bob to place on his beautiful Red Light District.  More will be made for Bill and Kris' town area.

Today I assembled two lamp posts and installed them on the mini diorama.

I mentioned the sidewalks were painted with Floquil Aged Concrete. In the weathering process, I tried something different. I applied a very light coat of Hunterline Driftwood A&I to the sidewalks. This gave them a dirty but not neglected look.

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-130318184759.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-130318184759.jpeg)

I also moved the posts closer to the street so the car doors get dinged. Better yet close enough where if you park in front of one you can't open the car door. I just wonder how I have this little bit of knowledge?

I'll wire the lights and show how they look tomorrow. I'm waiting for the glue to dry.

Tom...

My favorite thing to use for round street light globes are the clear plastic protectors that come on paint brushes.

I slice them up like salami.  I can get about four globes out of a single sleeve.  Most have gone on other people's railroads.

The apartment looks good.  I note there is only one parking space for a three story apartment.  The tenants must be in real competition for that space.  I suspect the local county commission's zoning board looked to the zoning ordinance in Tahope County for guidance on the number of spaces per unit.  Maybe the tenants all ride bicycles and the space out front is for the landlord.

I saw a bicycle chained to a lamp post in front of our local Winn-Dixie yesterday and it reminded me that I used to ride my bike the four blocks from my house to elementary school every day back in the early 50's.  The bicycle shed was behind the school and at least one hundred bikes were parked in it each morning.  None of them were locked and I don't remember a single bicycle theft.  I guess those were the days. . . . .

Judge,

I too remember those "theft free days".  I used to ride my Schwinn 10 speed to the Rexall Drug Store at Western Way Plaza. I'd leave my unlocked bike in the front, have a Vanilla Coke and then go down to Landis Stone Hardware to buy BB's.

Now, about the one car driveway. We are talking hard times on the Pennsy. You are correct in only the apartment manager had the privilege of parking in the space. The residents either had no cars or parked on the street or rode bikes.  8) 8)

Reading Bob built the Atlantic Scale Modelers Yard Office and brought it over one Saturday morning a few weeks ago. He suggest to ask if Bill and Kris Cutler wanted it. I gave my unbuilt kit to Bob for exchange.

The selfish streak in me wanted to keep it. But alas, it was offered to my friends up north. Meaning 30 miles north of Orlando.

I took it up to Bill and Kris this past Saturday. They wasted no time in placing it on the layout.

Looks wonderful all lit up and right at home on the Pennsy.
