John,

Here is a pic of another bridge of the same design that I weathered with Micro-Mark rust. At this point I only applied the rust material and have not considered applying PanPastel, but that might be a good consideration. I might try it on this bridge. Currently I have four bridges of this design on the layout being used as vehicular bridges. Any thoughts?

I think it needs soot and grime and more variation in the rust. Is that the original plastic color gray or did you paint it gray?

This one is to my liking

Google steel truss bridge and you'll find tons of images , most are copyrighted so I can't post them here.

I love photo's, don't we all.

Jan,
Thank you. you are the man. The only issue is that my bridges are highway bridges, not rail. I still think that more weathering is required and I like your example.

Good Evening Everyone,

I browsed pictures on bridges as recommend by Jan and found one that I like, Here is the picture. Not too rusty, but just the right amount of grey and rust. I am going to use one of my other bridges as the test piece, so give me a couple of days to model it.

That looks like the perfect example Frank, indeed a highway bridge would have less soot and grime without steam and diesel engines going through it.

It would be interesting to see pictures of bridges from the time period you're modeling.  Most of the highway bridges of the 40s and 50s would be relatively newer compared to today.  Did they refer maintenance back then like our DOT does now, or were they often repainted?

It's interesting that only the joints have been repainted on the bridge picture above - Just the minimum maintenance.

Looks good Frank.....it needs a little something, I'm not sure what, but it's a bit too perfect.  8)

Good Morning Greg,

Greetings from overcast Arizona. Almost looks like it is going to rain. Yes, I am in the train room working on scenery.
FYI, Tommy Boyd sent me an email with his comments and I have asked him to post them on the forum as well. It has been very interesting to read what everyone has observed. Tom actually has more items that he saw. Very good observations. This has been a very good exercise observation for both parties although there is a lot to do based on what everyone has seen. The bridge is my biggest project. Since it is already installed, I need to (a) figure what I am going to do and(b)figure how to do it. Oh the joys of modeling. I guess I should have seen some of these things beforehand. I am going to use one of my other bridges to experiment witth the weathering techniques. I'll let everone know what my final solution is shortly.

I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect solution and I look forward to seeing it.....but whatever you do - do it carefully.  ;D

Here's what Frank Baker wanted me to share to the Forum from the email...remember everyone has a different eye...most of this was on the Forum already, so will get down to a few items that may improve some areas ....
Add a figure on the SRMW Rugg stucco building staircase walking up or down the stairs holding the handrail.
Add a figure on the top of the oil loading platform, maybe bending over ... checking the tank cars
Add a figure or two on SRMW Delabarre Mill loading dock, holding a box...pushing a handcart...etc.
Will call these action figures , not just standing ones...George has many of the action figure scenes on his layout...
Add Engineers in loco's if time permits...someone mentioned this already...think Broadway Limited sells an 8 pack of them....
Add black soot under all bridge beams & above all tunnel portals with mainline RR tracks if you run steam engines...
Keep the rust and soot weathering soft like the weathering on the tanks of your oil depot .... that was done perfect !
Good Luck with the April-May layout photo session with Lou Sassi.  Hope these suggestions help out, everyone has a different eye.
Keep posting those photos, helps everyone to see things that you may miss looking at your layout all day long.

Tom,

All great observations. Now I just have to do them! I was talking to a fellow modelers here in Arizona yesterday and he mentioned waterbase oil paints. I had not heard of such a paint, but became very interested after he showed me some of his work using these paints. Well, actually, he also includes dry powdr pigments like Pan Pastels. SO I am off the Michaels to buy some waterbase oils and experiment with one of the other bridges. Stay tuned.
My wife is busy painting figures that I will be able to place in several scenes. Everyting is coming together, albeit slowly. Thank you for your wonderful comments. I hope more folks on the forum ask the same of their fellow modelers. As you can see, if you ask, you will get numerous responses that you might not normally see.

Bob,

I guess it is unanimous, more rust. But oh so carefully.
