As we turn the corner,  the F&SM Picture count is at 1588.  As we make our way around the layout again, George asked me to see if we could get an estimate on the number of structures on the layout.  We are going to give it a try using our grid on the layout map.  At this point the structure count is at 33. I will be updating these counts as I update the index.

Tom  - Thanks for posting the overall shots - it really helps to be able to locate each of the structures. I had the camera all setup for the closeups and never went back and took pictures of the overall scene in this area.

John,

You are very welcome. Thank you for all the close ups. I was worried about my time at the F&SM so I concentrated on the overall shots. It's a great partnership.

I have to admit though, I did't even see the second story road in your most recent post. I was surprised to see the photo and wondered how did, "I miss that"?

Then I realized I was just so over whelmed being there the first time.  I probably missed much more. Gives me something to look forward next time.

Before we move around the corner I need to explain about "the Stick".  Last summer I was sitting on a park bench in London, England waiting for my wife to finish looking at all the dead kings.  I was watching all the kids running around using selfie sticks to take their own picture with a famous landmark in the background.  For those of you that have been their Big Ben was right behind me. So being a true model railroader, I'm looking at this and thinking what great pictures I could take of the Franklin & South Manchester if George would let me use a selfie stick to mount my cameras on. I bought one when we got back and took some test pictures on my layout to see how well it would work.

In the weeks that proceeded this visit to the F&SM, I explained the selfie stick to George and he said he would take a look at it when a got their. George it will be like sending a 1:87 scale drone up the streets of Franklin taking pictures, I said.   Thom will appreciate my efforts in explaining a selfie stick to George - the guy that still uses a typewriter to write his kit instructions.

In the coming months we are going to take a new look at the F&SM from the eye of a drone - it worked.

Tom commented about missing the upper road in East Franklin.  I have been to the F&SM about 6 times and I'm seeing many things in these pictures that I never saw before.

Here is a selfie of me and George explaining how this was going work. I'm not sure if it's a selfie when you have two people in the picture.  The caption should read "how do I throw this crazy guy from Michigan out of here".

My thumb is on the trigger that is connected to the camera through blue tooth.  I could also zoom in and out with the touch of a button.

Here is one more selfie (the last selfie I will probably ever use the stick for) of the process.  Caption reads: where are my elbows, were is the camera, hold the camera still, did I get a shot of all four sides of this structure, don't hit anything.  George was behind me watching the pictures on the display saying, "I forgot that was even there".  He was sold and I spent two wonderful days photographing the layout with both my iPhone and the SLR. If you look close in the video that Frank Baker took you will see some action shots of the these pictures being captured.  I'm happy to report, in two days of shooting, we had only one missed place elbow that didn't result in any damage.

This was some serious work. I really had to get into the zone and not pay attention to anything else.

I should also report that I was one sore guy after doing this all day. I'm sure glad the pictures turned out good.

Also, a special thanks to Hal Reynolds who provided a backdrop to hid me when we took the pictures of the dark side of the structures. Yes, George details the back of the structures.  You will see it in the pictures and the video.

It was fun seeing the Big People interspersed with the trains on Frank's train-eye videos.

This time around I'm going to breakup the F&SM into sections using the layout map. We will go around the layout starting in Muddville and will cover all the sections in an area before moving on to the next section. So Franklin will start with tower 1 in section R 11, we will then move to R 10 and R 9 then move over a section and do Q 9, Q 10, and Q 11 etc. Remember that each section is 2 feet square so we can have a number of structures within a section.  We will work our way around the benchwork in this pattern. We will see if we covered the whole layout with pictures. As we come to a particular structure, we will look at all the photographs I have from every angle then move on to the next structure as we did in the previous thread. I will also post a reverence page if you want to refer back to the previous thread for a particular structure. The index will not only serve as a guide to find our favorite structure, but will also give us a structure count. At least until George changes something.  My guess is that it has already happened. Now, I know how to sort the pictures.  Let the sorting begin. Posting to follow.
