Thanks Ed. I feel like I don't work quick enough sometimes. I also forget to reply to posts for days or weeks sometimes, sorry about that. I'm trying to get my layout somewhat completed before my kids get too old to care about it. My youngest turns 2 this weekend and my oldest just turned 4 so I figure I have at least a few years.

I made a little progress this week. I got the small office mostly finished. I wanted a really nasty beat up white siding color to match the dirty red walls.

I colored the siding with a few washes of A&I. Then I washed them with straight turpentine. After the turpentine dried I colored them with the same Ivory I used for the trim. Once that dried I used a wire brush and some tape to really chew up the paint and pull it up followed by another coat of A&I and some chalks. I pretty much just kept on weathering it until I liked it.

I'll be filling in the roof gaps with some tar of course.

For the roof I used some Bar Mills shingles I had around. I bought a few packs of these shingles a while ago. They go on very easy and they are easy to weather up.
I used some A&I, drybrushing and chalks to color these.

Thanks for checking in. I already tar papered the main roof but it's pressed between some books drying. They used corrugated panels for the main roof and tar paper for the smaller roof. I'm going to use tar paper for the whole thing I think.

Steve,
I love what you did with the office, it is a perfect compliment to the main building.

Hi Steve:

Looks great. Love the weathering on the add on building. The colors all blend well together.

Steve, don't hurry too much, the kids will be grown up before you know it. Try to find ways to have them "want" to be involved and they will carry the hobby to their kids.

Thanks Marty, they are already growing up too fast.

I added the rest of the roofing and the cupola over the weekend. I chose not to use a combination of tarpaper and corrugated metal instead I chose to use all tarpaper for the main structure. I also changed the tarpaper color from red to black. I like red tarpaper but I felt it would look bad against my barn red walls.

The tarpaper is just normal printer paper spray painted with dark gray auto primer. I add nail holes at the patches and the overlapping sections, I think it adds a little character to the roof. I also like to roll the tarpaper over the edge of the roof card, something I learned from Brett Gallant.

For the roofing tar I used Gallery Glass Liquid Leading. In the past I used Epoxy and Grimy Black or white glue and Grimy Black but I think this works just as well. I also dusted the whole roof with dark brown and gray chalks. That also takes the shine off the liquid leading.

Thanks for checking in. If I get some time this week I should be able to finish this one I think.

Steve,
Man! I just love the way this build has turned out.  I really like both the colors and the weathering is really realistic! 8)  Brother keep showing off your skills.  Thanx Thom...

Hello Everyone,

I pretty much completed the bones of the kit over the long weekend minus the details. I also spent some time finding and adjusting it's home on the layout.

The alcove roof is left over roof material from another kit. I sprayed it with Rust-Oleum Flat Brown Primer, chewed the edges with some sharp scissors and dusted with several rust shades of chalk.

I'm waiting for the plaster road to set up on the area where this will sit on the layout. Once the area is complete I'll put it in place and start detailing around it.

Thanks for checking in. I'd like to make a thread detailing my layout, does anyone know of good free software I can make a image of the track plan?

Great build - what everyone else said.  You have definitely got the eye for color and weathering - I'm really enjoying your threads.
Thanks for sharing your work with us.
