Tom, that is going to be really impressive when it's built. It's going to be huge.

I agree with Curt.  This will be impressive.

Jim

Jim,

I sure hope so, I'm working on it and the weathering will be the final touch.

All right Tom, you're back in the saddle again!  Going to be fun watching your progress.

Mark,

Yes, back in the saddle but not 10-12 hours a day like the past four months. I'm just in the pony saddle for now.

Looks good Tom...I'm a fan of a darker color like Black or Green...but mostly because I like hardcore weathering  ;)

John

John,

Thanks for the comment. I'm going with black and silver for a contrast. However, it will be heavily weathered.

I have a confession of sorts to make.

I'm not sure if it's a hold over from the NMRA open house, Hurricane Irma or what.  No matter how I feel, I can't seem to get interested in the layout work. I've been this way for a few weeks now.

I was speaking to Frank Baker, Erieman, this afternoon and he said he went through a similar period after the MRR shoot with Lou Sassi. Frank said he is getting over it but still has the same issue.

Maybe I need more Diet Pepsi, I've been cutting back and attempting to drink more water. ;D ;D ;D

I'm sure it will pass but for now I'm just getting by on a few, okay, 1-2 hours a day in the layout room. I come in, look around, turn around, turn off the lights, leave and lock the door.

However, I do have a little update.

Tom ;D

Good Morning Tom,

Yes, I still have some of that syndrome. Maybe we should name it. I think the only solution is to just keep walking into the train room and say that your not done yet and what an I going to do today. A list might help. Hot weather help for me. When it is 110 outside, i'm in the train room.

I wish you luck getting rid of this dreaded disease "trainitis" or what ever it is. We both have a long way to go. Have a great day my friend, drink a lot of water and play with trains.

Frank / Erieman

Evening Frank,

As always, it was great speaking with you this afternoon, Thank you for the package as well.

I decided to pull up my big boy pants and get back to work. I figured what ever I had will eventually go away. I must admit that today I found myself actually working on the layout and it's supporting cast for 8+ hours.

Time for some water, er, Diet Pepsi. 8) 8)

Today I spent the better part of 8+ hours working on the tanker car fueling racks/platforms.

I should mention here although the kit comes with a set of instructions, I'm putting on my lawyer hat and say that the instructions are less than clear and unambiguous. There are parts mentioned that don't correspond to any part numbers. There are also parts shown with no part number.

For this kit, Walthers would have been better off by just saying "Glue this here, glue that there and then glue them all together." ;D ;D ;D ;D

I finally got all the pipes laid out in the correct order.

More in a few. The Babe is calling.

Okay, back after a short Babe break!

I plan on painting the pipe supports with a Grimy Black color and the support bases with Floquil Aged Concrete.

I have two bottles of Floquil Weathered Black and three of the Grimy Black and didn't want to use the paint on this kit since it will be heavily weathered.

Tamiya makes a very close color to Floquil's Grimy Black. It is German Grey #XF-63.

The match for Floquil's Weathered Black is Tamiya #XF-69, Nato Black. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture of this set.

I added the small pipes to the long pipes. I don't know what to call them so I'll call them what Walthers called or named them - Parts 16,17 and 18. Yep, go figure.

I then glued those little round thingies to the top of parts 16, 17 and 18. I'm assuming the round pieces are pipe couplings or part 28 to be exact. ??? ???

Tamiya paints also come in a spray can. Not all the colors are available. For example, the Nato Black and German Grey don't come in spray. At least those numbers were not listed on the display rack.

I hand painted the Tamiya German Grey on the supports and Floquil Aged Concrete on the bases.

I used Tamiya Silver in the spray can to paint the pipes I

I really like how the Tamiya spray paints cover the parts. The silver was dry to the touch in just over an hour.

Here is one section of the pipes and rack. The top platform and filler pipes are to be added next.  This is one section and a total of four will be used. When finished the platform will be over 24 inches in length.

Tom,

I am glad to see and hear that you have overcome your lack of exuberance. I know of what you speak, I had big plans to build some F&C cars while I was here, they are coming back in the same form as when they left. Not all, but some. The layout is looking very nice, the petroleum storage will be a great addition to the empire. I vote for silver tanks, sun reflection consideration, you are in the south after all.

Coming along nicely Tom.  I like the paint colors you chose.  I have one of the piping kits.  I looked over the instructions and you are correct.....they are as clear as mud.

I use Neutral Grey #3 for Weathered Black.  You can get both paints and paint markers.
