The fence is really incredible Tom.

My thoughts exactly..."just a detail" but master craftsmanship and, as usual, no compromises. Nice work!

The fence is absolutely going to be worth the time spent, awesome Tom.

Jan,

Thank you, much appreciated. I think in the end it will be just what I wanted.

I can't wait to see how you put the barbs on the barbed wire.   ::) :)

Dave,

No sure anyone makes HO scale barbed wire so I'll just use loose woven thread like I did on the wood fence around the farm area.

Curt,

Thank you for the kind words. There will be no barbed wire except in your imagination. ;D ;D

Hi Tom,

Great tutorial and a good looking fence.  The bar between the posts looks so much better than your other trials.

Steve,

Very much appreciate your support on the fence. I agree on the bars in the middle, just looks correct.

My plans for today included making the long fence. Mr. Murphy had other plans and due to Murph and 1:1 life stuff, the fence didn't get started.

I didn't get in the train room until well after 1 PM so I decided to make the gates for the main entrance to the fuel facility.

During the process mistakes were made. Note the plural on the mistake issue. I'll share them with you all the same as I usually do.

I used a simple but effective way to make the gate hinges.

I started by cutting four short, I didn't measure just eyeballed, pieces of brass tubing. I used 3/32 X .014 tubing.

I then slid the 1/16 brass rods into the tubing. as shown below.

I aligned the four pieces as shown in the next photo.

I taped the rods so there would be no movement when soldering.

I then soldered the tubing to make the hinge. I made sure not to get any solder on the inside rod. This is the rod that will swing the gate.

Next I made a 90 degree bend in the brass rod and checked it twice for squareness.

At this point in the build I took a Diet Pepsi break so now is a good time for another DP break.

Here is a look at the beginning of the gate build.

I then started making the left half of the gate. When I got to the bottom section I realized I made a mistake in the gate height in relation to the hinge.

In this next photo you can see the point of my file pointing to the mistake.

If these three pieces are soldered together, the swing bar (on the right) won't fit into the hinge.

I decided to solder only the bottom and angle rods. I then used the Dremel cut off disc and carefully removed some of the brass rod from the two inside pieces.

Not taking a chance in solder getting on the swing rod, I used tape to cover the rod as I soldered the other two pieces.

You can see in the next photo where I dodged a bullet.

You can barely see the gap between the bottom rod and hinge. The fit is good enough to make it look like the pieces are soldered together and a part of the hinge.

Better news is that the gate swings with no interference.

My faulty measuring caused another problem. The right gate post was cut to short making the right gate fit lower than the left gate.

I wasn't going to make a new post and hinges so I simply soldered on a short rod piece to the bottom. I then fit it in the hole and cut off a little on the bottom until it was level with the left side.

I started making the right gate (it shows it on the left).  I made the gates in reverse on the pattern as the top portion of the fence post with the angle wouldn't lay flat.

I made sure the two gate halves were level.
