ACL 1504,
Were you ever a dam builder in your former life?
                                                                              Thanx Thom...

I don't think he has but he's always been on the level.   ::)

Bob,

I'm on the level except when my bubble is off! 8)

I don't think he leans to either side actually! ;D

Thom,

No, I'm pretty much a straight up kind of guy. I don't lean either way.

I scratch built one on my old, old layout and then re-engineered it into a coal dump ramp.

Here is the one from the old, old layout.

This new one won't be as high as the old one.

More in a few.
This is a fantastic looking bridge, well done.

Lynn,

Thank you for the kind words on the bridge. It was a fun scratch building project.

The main problem with bench work that is cantilevered over another section is that it needs a support of some sort. This is especiailly true of the one I have over the lubritroium area.

I also plan to have a third level over the second level. The second level is the layout section that will be down the middle and between the East and West sections of the layout.

I plan on using the method of supporting the center third level over the cantilevered area.

I got my idea from Bill Cutler of the Pennsy, Six miles West of Altoona layout.

He has a steel rod this size supporting the upper level over his farm area.

I got a 5/16 threaded steel rod. I cut a small section out of the scenery and drilled the appropriate hole for the rod. I used a washer and nut to prevent the rod from going through the layout.

I glued and screwed a 2X2 to a 1X4 and then screwed the 1X4 to the inside of the bench work as shown in the photo below. I drilled a 5/16 hole in the 2X2 for the rod to fit in.

By placing the nut and then the washer on the top portion of the rod, I could adjust the washer by moving the nut towards the top. For every turn of the wahser, I was able to raise the upper level brace to a level position.

The steel rod is sturdy enough and secure so the upper level is now secure, level and none moving.

Greg and the Judge were here this morning to see this and they can post their comments if desired.

I filled the area around the rod with scenery.

The rod appeared to really stand out but after a few days, I hardly notice it. I'll paint it a pale green later.

The cantilevered bench work is now level north, south, east and west.

All is well on the A&S RR. And, as Reading Bob said, I'm on the level.

It appears to be a bit more sturdy..... ;)

Greg,

Appears?

When you did the pull ups didn't all hold up except the small level? 8)

John,

Thank you, I'm moving forward on the third level now.

Tom...

When you paint that ready rod green, put some palm fronds on it and call it a cell tower.

I have very sad news to report this evening.

A very close and dear friend on mine passed away this afternoon. The passing wasn't easy as she tried to hold on but the bearings were just to worn out.

As I was cutting some 1X3 cross braces, my 25 year old 10 inch table saw gave up the ghost. :'( :'( :'( :'(

A moment of silence please.

Tom..

My steam powered table saw from 1954 is still out there chugging away.  If it's a belt drive saw unit you should be able to replace the bearings.  They don't make 'em that good any more.
