For the second level island/center portion as well as the entire third level, I made a major change in turnouts. I'm now using PECO Stremline Insulfrog #6 and #8 turnouts.

When I last visited The Ogen & Cache Valley Railroad of Doug Fletcher, he was using PECO turnouts. I was very impressed how smooth the locos and rolling stock handled the turnout frogs. I pushed a few of the Walthers 86' cars through and they were as smooth as if the cars were on a section of straight track.

I'll be using #6's for the center portion with two or three #8's for the loco yard leads. The #8's are for longer wheel based steamers.

In the photo above, the turnout is a #8 and will be the home track for a brass C&O H5 Class 2-6-6-2.

Peco US Code 83?  I had a tough decision between ME Code 70 and Peco Code 83.  I bought a couple pieces of each and compared how they looked after they were painted, etc.  For my 1890s era, the Code 70 was a better choice for me (even though it's a bit fussy to lay because it's kinda fragile.)

Evidently someone can't read Morse code.
The message being conveyed is to the crews that the burgers on the rails in the adjoining pit are ready.

Hi Tom,

You are really making great progress on your layout and it is looking very good as always.  I really enjoy watching your work.

Tom,

As usual you have brought interest to a feature that is normally passed over in a engine facility, nicely done. Is the pit area finished, is there more to the scene?

I like the "Fire in the Hole" effect.  Just hope it doesn't start a fire in the Tender. ::) ::) ::)

And for those of you old enough to remember, we hope there are no stations nearby.  ;)

6+hours daily!!! No wonder you make so much progress. Wish I could discipline myself to do that. Perhaps your rate of progress allows you to feed your drive to keep working.

With the lighting now in place, will you consider perhaps attempting to spray a "skin" layer of glue on the ashes to hold them down?  Can you imagine if an operator reaching in to uncouple would suddenly sneeze?

Thom,

That is my way of saying, "If you are going to show a loco dropping ashes, make dang sure the firebox is over the pit, Doh!
