Thanks John , great tutorial, never would have tried the brighter colors if I hadn't seen this.

Thanks for stopping by the thread - the colors I'm using are not bright (the iPhone camera makes them look that way) they are deep.  I'm basically adding lots of pigment so there is extra to move around with the big brush. The raw umber tint then helps to blend everything together.  This is the same process I use to color my mountains, only in that case I'm using acrylic paint.

yeah, that's quite a remarkable transformation. Looks good.

Thanks for the kind words, and for stopping by the thread. I have spent the day completing all of the walls and subassemblies for this build. The process is very repeatable.  I will post some pictures this evening.

John,

Fantastic job on the walls. The before and after photos are stunning. Very well done my friend. All thumbs up for down here.

Great looking stone, and I never thought about fixative as an intermediate step.

The fixative works well to hold the base colors and provides some tooth for the final applications of chalks to fine tone the color and texture.

Thank you for the kind words, my friend. I spent a good part of the day completing the coloring of the rest of the walls.  Tomorrow, I should be able to start the assembly process.

Opa George

John, that is a remarkably realistic effect on those walls. I don't think I've seen anything quite like that previously.

Thank you for the kind words - I'm real happy with it. I have completed about 8 walls with it now and have about another 8 ready for the final steps and the process is real repeatable. I think I will be able to get the look I want once I have everything in place and put the final blend coat of chalk on.

The second batch of wall castings has made it through the painting process, through the fixative step.  I plan to install them on the base board and apply the final coat of blending chalks, in place, after construction.

Let the assembly begin. Lots of gluing to be done over the next few days.

A few more progress pictures this evening:  Bob provides a plaster casting in the kit for the timber dam.  I decided to build my own out of wood. There will be some changes - sorry it's the Engineer in me. I built the timbers board on board with a hidden frame to hold them in place. I will be adding additional supports rather than just relying on the stone  foundation on each side of the timbers to support the force from the backwaters agains the timbers. The water level for the backwaters can be adjusted by adding or removing the timbers.
