This Gas Dock is also needed for the Suwannee River Basin. I'll be building this one along with Delwin's Boat and Net Storage and the CCK Lucama Fish Camp.

Karl,
Thanks for posting your build pictures. I have these in my KS file. You did a great job on this and now the pressure is on!
Tom ;D
I plan on starting this one in the next couple of weeks. Need to make sure my layout survives the hurricane.
There is a very large live oak on the SE corner. The good news is that it is leaning away from the building.
Tom ;D
Hi Tom:
Good luck with the Hurricane. Get All Those Kits up as high as you can. Hope you make it through unscathed. I'm praying for you buddy.

Karl,
Thanks very much. My lot is the highest within a four block radius. The oak tree is more of a concern than flooding. All kits and structures are at the far end and away from where the tree may fall, if at all. I had it trimmed last summer for just this occasion. 8)

Hi Tom,
Count me in as a follower. I really like the looks of this little kit. Both the pilot model (that I can only assume Doug built) as well as Karl's build which he did such a wonderful job on. It's going to look great where you're planning on putting it.

I was going to start this build this afternoon. Notice I said WAS!

I cleaned up the layout room and now I can't find the kit. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I know its here some where and will eventually show up. I'll find it when I'm looking for something else.
Just one of many senior moments and more to come for sure. :'( :'( :'(

Hey all,
Great news, I found the kit. It was in another kit.
I gave up trying to find Bud's and decided to do more work on Delwin's Boat and Net Storage. I removed the instruction booklet from the box and there was Bud's kit.
I've been working on it since last night and today.
I'll have some pictures later this evening.
Tom ;D
The four walls came in a carrier sheet.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173659.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173659.jpeg)
While the walls were still in the carrier sheets I added nail holes using the small ponce wheel from Micro Mark.
I used a #17 Xacto blade to cut the tabs holding them in place.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173712.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173712.jpeg)
More in a few.
Once the walls were removed, I sanded the edges square. When walls are cut using a laser the laser cuts/burns at a slight angle. I've found that if I don't sand the edges the corner trim doesn't fit as well.
In the photo below you can see one wall is sanded and the other one isn't. I try to lightly sand the edges to remove any of the brown cut/burns from the laser.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173723.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173723.jpeg)
I used the supplied 1/16" square strip wood to brace the backs of the walls. When dry I painted the walls with a very thin wash of Floquil Reefer White.
I got so excited about finding the kit I forgot to show the bracing and painting steps. My bad.
More in a few.
I painted the corner trim with Polly Scale Pacemaker Red.
I then pulled the trim through a paper towel to remove some paint and give it a lighter color.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173735.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173735.jpeg)
I painted the doors and windows with the same PS Pacemaker Red.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173746.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173746.jpeg)

(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173758.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-271016173758.jpeg)
Well, its Diet Pepsi time.
The corner trim was added and the two buildings were assembled.

The dock is made up of two layers, the float layer and the decking layer.
Here is the decking layer. I plan lighting Bud's so you can see where I cut part of the float layer to allow for LED wires.

The instructions call for scale 2X10 strip wood to be used for the decking planks. One problem, there are no scale 2X10 strip wood pieces. I did find scale 3X12 strip wood in the kit. I'll used them as it is for the deck planking.
I wanted to have some grain so I pulled each piece of 3X12 under an Xacto saw blade. I stained each piece of 3X12 with one coat of Hunterline A&I Cordovan Brown. One coat only.
As Capt. Ramius said, "Give me one ping, Vasili. One ping only, please."

Per the instructions, I edge glued 2X6s to the side of the floating platform.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016140916.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016140916.jpeg)
I then glued the planking to the top. I used a heavy weight as a flat surface to ensure the planking was straight.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016140930.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016140930.jpeg)
More in a few.
When the planking was thoroughly dry, I poked a hole in the planks to mark where I needed a larger hole for the lighting wires.
I then used the back side of an Emory board and sanded the top of the planks. I've discovered this sanding really brings out the grain and color variations of the A&I stain.

More in a few.
I'm going to jump ahead a little bit here and discuss the rafters. I've already installed an LED and will go over that next.
The instructions call for scale 2X6s to be used for the exterior rafters. I decided to use scale 2X4s instead.
Here is how the gable end looks with 2X4 exterior rafters. They appear to fit the scale of the structure better than the 2X6s.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142454.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142454.jpeg)
Here is how a scale 2X6 looks next to the 2X4.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142505.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142505.jpeg)
The 2X6 just doesn't look good.
More in a few.
Jumping back to the LED now. I used a Miniatronics surface mount LED. This is the same style LED I used in the A&S RR passenger station platforms. It is Miniatronics item #12-625-04, Yeloglo White LED and comes in a four pack.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142518.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142518.jpeg)
The yeloglo white is a bit misleading as when lit, it is very bright.
I wanted to tone it down some. Reading Bob told me he sometimes uses Tamiya clear yellow and paints this over the LED.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142530.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142530.jpeg)
Continued in a few.
In the photo below you can see the difference. The one on the left is out of the package and the one on the right has a coat of clear yellow on the LED.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142542.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142542.jpeg)
Back to the lighting later in the thread.
More in a few, Diet Pepsi time.
I glued the little office on the left under the roof and set the structure aside.
I then cut out the opening for the LED wires in the floating dock. You can see a light pencil line on the planks that mark the location of the two small buildings when glued to the dock.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016192646.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016192646.jpeg)
Here is how it looks on the dock. It has yet to be glued in place.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142555.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142555.jpeg)
More in a few.
I mentioned the instructions call for one set of exterior rafters but only on the gable ends of the two small buildings. I decided to add a set of exterior roof rafters and rafter tails to the front. The rear of the structure won't be seen unless John Siekirk comes over and uses his selfie camera stick to get a shot of the rear. ;D ;D ;D
I used the scale 2X4s for all the extra rafters and rafter tails. This is a step I really didn't want to do but I'm glad I did as it makes the building look much better.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142606.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142606.jpeg)

Back to the LED lighting.
Here is how it looks with the one coat of clear yellow painted over the LED. It's to bright.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142631.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142631.jpeg)
I applied another coat of the clear yellow. Still to bright.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142643.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142643.jpeg)
A third coat of the clear yellow proved to be the magic coat.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142655.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-291016142655.jpeg)
The wires are shown in the photo below. They will be left out until I get the over head sign LED installed.
I checked the alignment of the structure and glued it to the dock planks.

Hey Tom, How did I miss this build? It's coming along really nice. The decking on the dock is superb. I'll have to try your trick of lightly sanding the A&I boarding for that texture. Those rafters do make a difference in the appearance of the building. A pain...but worth it.
Tom,
Bud's looks great so far. I agree that using the 2x4 for the rafters looks 'right' as opposed to the 2x6's. Also, taking the time to add the extra rafter tails really adds a lot to the structure. Well done! :D :D :D

Mark,
Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you found the thread. I came upon the Emory technique quite by accident. I was building the dock for the fishing shacks. I got some glue on the planking and used the Emory board to remove the glue. The result was a much better looking dock planking.

The rafter tails wee a pain but well worth the effort.

Tom,
Bud's looks great so far. I agree that using the 2x4 for the rafters looks 'right' as opposed to the 2x6's. Also, taking the time to add the extra rafter tails really adds a lot to the structure. Well done! :D :D :D
Bob,
I appreciate the compliment, thank you. The 2X4s were a much better choice and as you said they look right.
Tom ;D
Well, I'm changing the model yet again.
The roof panels were longer, top to bottom, than I wanted. As they come in the kit they are to long in height and cover to much of the front of the structure.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133552.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133552.jpeg)
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133604.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133604.jpeg)
Top to bottom they are 1 inch. I wanted them to stop just past the roof drip line. I cut them down to 3/4 inch.
More in a few.
You can see that the roof panels are now the correct size and are just a bit over the roof drip line.
Plus, you can see the rafter tails.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133638.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133638.jpeg)
I used a metal ruler and cut the 1/4 inch off each roof panel.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133627.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133627.jpeg)
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133650.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133650.jpeg)
More in as few.
I deviated from the instructions in two other areas. The instructions call for the panels to be cut in 1/2 inch widths. I added 1/8 inch and cut mine to 5/8 inch widths. No reason, I just did!
Also, the instructions call for the modeler to glue the roof panels on and then add a 2X4 to the top of the roof. I didn't think this would look good so I took another approach.
I noticed that Karl deviated from the 2X4 ridge beam and used the panel to overlap the roof ridge. See page one of this thread for Karl's model.
Anyway, I didn't feel I could get the proper look of a 2X4 balanced on top of the roof ridge.
I used an Emory board and sanded the ridge from a point to a scale width of a 2X4.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133704.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133704.jpeg)
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133732.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133732.jpeg)
More in a few.
In the next photo you can see how I've flattened the ridge for the 2X4.
Now, obviously on a real 1:1 structure this would be one leaky roof. However, on this model it serves two purposes. One is that the 2X4 also supports the roof sign and second the simulated galvanized panel fit flush up against the 2X4.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133741.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133741.jpeg)
The next photo shows the 2X4 on the flattened ridge.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133752.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133752.jpeg)
Continued in a few, now where did I put that Diet Pepsi?
I glued the 2X4 in place and set it aside to dry. When dry I trimmed the 2X4 to fit the roof.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133829.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133829.jpeg)
You can also see how the panel fits flush against the 2X4.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133809.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133809.jpeg)
More in a few.
I painted the roof panels with full strength Floquil DH Gray to represent old galvanized panels.
Prior to gluing them in place, I used a file to file any glue the squeezed out from under the 2X4. I didn't want the panels to not fit properly.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133842.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133842.jpeg)
The panels were then glued to the roof card.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133855.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133855.jpeg)
More in a few.
All the panels are now glued in place.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133908.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133908.jpeg)

Thanks Butty, appreciate the compliment. This has been a fun build up to now.

Tom, the structure will fit perfectly into your layout. For the dock, I often pad my finger on some chalk or dirt and grind it into the dock in areas. Thus also adds texture and some color dimension.
Can't way until is placed on the layout.
Marty
The roof paint dried enough for the "Gas & Bait" stenciling.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133932.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016133932.jpeg)
I fit the stencil flush with the bottom of the 2X4 and centered it on the roof.
I used Floquil Light Blue and applied the paint. I put some paint on a piece of cardboard. I used a pointed brush for the paint application, not the brush shown below.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016173211.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-301016173211.jpeg)
The brush I used is one that I got from Micro Mark. It comes in a set of four and is referred to in the MM web site as dry brushing brushes. Karl S. put me on the the set.
Anyway, I held the stencil in place and worked one letter at a time from left to right. I basically dry brushed the light blue on the roof. I didn't pull the brush down but instead dabbed/stippled the paint on.

Thank you and I'll try the finger chalk/dirt on the next dock, loading or other wise. Thanks for the tip. I'll add this to my tip list.
I'm anxious for it to get on the layout also.

At the Scranton, PA. Expo I picked up one of Doug's weathering powder kits. I guess I just wanted to support the hobby as I have enough weathering powders to last me a lifetime with out these.

One thing I always do is copy the sign sheet in all kits I build. This is good practice in case you have a need for the original sign. I keep the original and use the copy for the structures. Another reason is that it gives my quite a few signs to use in different places and on other buildings.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-011116155506.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-011116155506.jpeg)
I used an unused piece of chipboard and glued the sign on. When dry I cut the sign out of the chipboard.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-011116155518.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-011116155518.jpeg)
I then framed the sign with 2x4's.

The sign was centered and glued to the 2x4 on the roof. 2x4 bracing was added to each side.

The tall sign post was built per the instructions. Prior to cutting out the signs for the sing posts, I added Scotch Tape to the back to give the sign some stiffness. They were then cut out of the sheet and glued to the posts.

Since this is a tidal dock, it needs to be able to rise and fall with the tide, yet stay in place.
I took the dowel used for the piling and wrapped a piece of brass wire around it.

The boat was an experience in itself. The boat consists of 7 separate pieces of chip board. Doug suggested using some fast drying CA glue to assemble the boat.
Building the boat was difficult for me as I kept glue my fingers together with the fast acting super glue. At one point I needed to pour a little Acetone in a cup so I could dip my fingers in it to "UNGLUE" my fingers.
I finally finished the boat and even though it appears a little out of scale it does make a nice looking model.
The boat was painted with Floquil Coach Green and Depot Buff.

Diet Pepsi time folks.
I wasn't sure where I wanted the dock to be positioned so I moved it around until I found a spot I was comfortable with it's location.
While in position, I marked where the four corner pilings should be glued and where the approach walkway would rest on the bank.
(https://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-101116161941.jpeg) (http://modelersforum.com/gallery/24-101116161941.jpeg)
I then cut and glued the four piling in place. When dry, I replaced the floating gas dock and positioned the walkway on the bank. I then removed the scenery and added a dirt approach.

I removed the walkway and glued the handrails in place. After taking the below photo, I realized I glued the handrails to the top of the walkway and not the sides. I removed them and glued them to the outside edge, flush with the bottom of the walkway.

Soldering leads to teeny, tiny LED's and then putting them in those Tichy lamp reflectors is a real pain in the you-know-what but it's well worth the effort when you see them lit up like that. Well done my friend. Very, very cool. 8) 8) 8)

a-HA! So THAT's why the Preparation H hasn't been helping me all this time!
Nice job Tom! Looks great. Glad you didn't have to run over to Greg's for the extinguisher.
