I got that issue for the coverage of Andrew Dodge's magnificent O Scale 1890s Colorado Midland.  I've seen this layout in person, and it's even better than it looks in the magazine.

Last week while in Florida with my wife on a short holiday in Panama City Beach, we took a trip to visit Tom aka ACL1504 in Orlando to pick up my engines. An interesting thing has occurred since running them on the layout. Actually I mean running the 2-8-4. The longer wheel base engine is showing where there are obstructions, trackage or clearance issues on the layout. Several are very easy fixes and some are not. There is a dual mainline curve in the town of Essex Falls that has shown to have two problems. The first was a simple fix. It needed a sleeper rail on a section of track prior to a facing switch on a curve. The second issue has been more of a construction project as you can see in the photo. Heading into the curve, the lead driver came off the track because the curve was incorrect, based on its turning requirements. This has meant taking out a section of track, removing the ballast, removing the glue, resectioning a piece of new track with the correct curve. A test curve piece was formed and test fit. Problem solved. Now I just need to finish the installation, weather and ballast the track and this problem is solved.


I have also found a few other problems where scenery is interfering with the engine, primarily in a curve. One is under the layout at the beginning of a helix. A support post needs to be shaved down. There ate two other areas of scenery, one easy and one no so much. I have a chooch cast wall on a curve and the engine overhang is too close to the track, stopping the forward motion of it. I probably have a few more days of trackside adjustments to allow this beautiful engine go all the way around the layout without any further scenery, track or other problems. This engine is sweet. Interesting dilemmas....

With my tight radius stuff with trolleys, I routinely need to put in extra guide rails.  I have seen any number of prototype photos where they exist so I have no problem  using them for good operations.

Good Morning Bob and thank you for stopping by. My track issue on the curve has been resolved. The glue is drying. Then some paint, ballast and then on to another project. The engine that Tom painted is a beautiful engine and it is also showing me some running issues including a few track issues, but more importantly, some scenery interference's. That problem will take more time to fix. The engine is too beautiful not to run around my layout. I'll post a final pic of the area with paint and ballast and weathering later in the week.

Glad you like the picture. The early morning sun comes through one of the blinds and creates this effect twice a year. And the buildings on the front should look familiar. These are the originals. I need to install lighting on both structures. The street billboard has the lights installed, but as of yet, has not been installed on the layout Another thing to do. I am awaiting the caboose marker lamps to install, The trucks are already installed.


All the roof work on the house this week has kept me quite busy, even thought I really did not do any, well maybe a little, work on it. Now that the roof is done, I'm back in the train room. Thanks for your kind words.
