Looking good Tom.....don't let the little people fall in the pit..... ;D

Greg,

Thank you sir. No little people have been harmed in any way, yet.

Had to laugh when I saw the picture with all the tools strewn about.  Hit a little to close to home.   ;D

Jeff,

Ain't it the truth. I start a project and all of a sudden the tools come out to play. Then they don't want to leave.

I worked on the ash pit area this afternoon.

The bottom and sides were glued in place. The pit will actually be lined with scale 8x8s as well as the gondola pit.

Here is the pit area from yesterday.

I cut strips of plywood and glued them to the underside of the pit area. When dry I then glued and screwed a piece of plywood to the bottom for the ash pit floor.

When I line the pit area, I'll also build an I-beam support for the rails. The ties will eventually be removed.

Here are just some photos of the area. I've been placing the water columns, water tank and coaling tower in different spots. I definitely  won't be dedicating this much space to the area.

ACL 1504,

Me guess' I hit a nerve on my pragmatist friend with my affront of reality. One could easliy tell your 72 year young heart pumps just fine to the point it lets you woolgathering a little too much. (just sayin')

Also you should accede putting a pinball spring loaded plunger under the layout where the gon sits at a low angle.  Wouldn't it be cool to see if an operator can score a couple points when picking up the car. ha.

Nice work my friend!  KP-out...  P.S. speaking of looking in the mirror. I gots a face only a blind mother could love!

Having seen the layout it is even more impressive to see how much you accomplish in such a short time. Enjoying the updates.

Often the prototype tried to speed things up by doing two steps at once - cleaning the fire while filling the tender with water was fairly common.  Did southern prototypes steam-clean locomotive running gear on the inbound engine tracks?  It was common in New England; to model it you need wood slat platforms beside the tracks and some sort of shed to store the steam lances and hoses.

And the hose was handy if there was a concern about the coals starting a fire (burning the cribbing timbers?)

Thom,

Great job on the homework. You certainly have your waggery going. I guess Landa loves the face as well.

I appreciate the comments on the layout. The ash pit isn't finished as I have many details to make it look right. Stay tuned for those updates.

Jim,

Thank you for the compliment, much appreciated. Lots of new stuff to see when you and Deb return.

BTW, I did get your email but haven't taken the time to answer. It may be easier for me to call with the info, very easy to do.

James,

The water columns will be near the ash pit. I'm not sure how the southern railroads used the inbound tracks. I only have the Prince books to go by and they aren't that much help. However, on the A&S RR, the plan is clear and unambiguous for steam locos.

I appreciate you stopping by for a look and comment.
