Often the prototype tried to speed things up by doing two steps at once - cleaning the fire while filling the tender with water was fairly common.  Did southern prototypes steam-clean locomotive running gear on the inbound engine tracks?  It was common in New England; to model it you need wood slat platforms beside the tracks and some sort of shed to store the steam lances and hoses.
And the hose was handy if there was a concern about the coals starting a fire (burning the cribbing timbers?)

Dave,

I plan on having concrete blocks lining the ash pit. Thanks for checking in.

Thom, James and Dave brought up some great points in regards to the ash pit area. They are ahead of my thread as I planned to share my ideas as I built the pit area. So, more on my detailing later in the build thread concerning the ash pit.

Today, I finished the pit area. I added a piece of photo board to the bottom. I also made a small piece on the edge of the pit for the wheels on the conveyor. I still need to add the concrete blocks to the sides.

A final adjustment was made to the gondola ramp. I made it low enough to clear the conveyor but not so low it was buried in the pit area.

Great work Tom. A question I have (I have never modeled a ash pit) is I assume that the 2 tracks over the pit is where your steamers will dump their ash pans. Do RR workers push or shovel those ashes to the edge for the conveyor?

Curt,

Thank you kind sir. On the A&S RR, the ashes are moved to the edge via an horizontal Archimedes' Screw to the conveyor belt. Of course you won't see it due to all the ash. 8) 8) 8)  Workers will push the left over ash to the the screw.

Jim,

I plan on using Hayes wheel stops for the gondola ramp.

Ignore Greg's response.

Several years, maybe more than that like 2005, I made some retaining wall blocks. I cut off the bottom of Woodland Scenics tunnel portal and made a rubber mold (RTV) of several pieces.

I didn't have any Hydrocal so I used regular patching plaster.

More in a few.
