Howdy folks,

The next car build is the On30 Flat car gondola by IMA.  This promises to be another fun build.

Here are the obligatory prototype car and the kit component breakdown.

Howdy folks,

The frame is the first step with the most tedious tasks.

The frame was laser cut, but the bolsters had to be sloped by hand carving.

Thirty-six stake pocket and eight queen post holes were drilled with a #63 bit.

As a hole guide, a paper template was taped to the frame, and holes were drilled.

Stake pockets and queen posts were glued in place.

The final step for today was to begin painting the deck.  I used Dr. Ben's weathered gray stain.

Have fun,
mike

I like a low speed pistol-grip battery screwdriver and the Micro-Mark hex shaft pin vises for drilling lots of holes:

I learned that from the late Craig Bisgeier.  These pin vises are a case where it's worth buying from Micro-Mark, I tried 'train show tool vendor' products and they weren't concentric.  MM often has these on sale if you buy a group of them.

Howdy Dave, I was tempted to set up the Dremel drill press, but by the time I could have gotten it from the closet, cleared a space for it, I would have been done with the hand vise.  I'll check the hex shaft vises for one that will fit my small drill.  Thanks, mike

Mike, that template makes placing the holes very easy.
It's a great idea.
Nice color on the wood deck.

Great progress. I always do the pin vise by hand. Interesting that the drill works. Nice shade on the deck.

Mike great start on the car. I also use a pin vice so I have better control especially if I'm drilling into a softer material.

Howdy folks,

Rick, Curt, Larry, and Philip, thank you for your comments and support.  They are much appreciated.

The gondola is nearing completion.  Trucks and couplers are the two big items left.

Here is a belly view that will never be seen...

Sideboards are assembled from individual planks.

Sideboards and stakes form the gondola.

Sideboards installed.  I'll make a load that will add weight to the car.

Trucks are assembled and ready for paint.  That's it for today.

Have fun,
mike

Mike, Howdy,

As I expected, the stock car looks fantastic, I love it!

All the freight cars look great. Well done Mike.
