Modeling the Northeast in the 1890s - because the little voices told me to

Jim Donovan

Good Morning Folks;

It is chilly out, was 32 when I got the paper, cold for Florida. Rick great photo same for you Karl, thanks for sharing.

I grew up in a small Village in Western New York. Three churches and no stop lights. The recent snow they had is unique to the folks there now but was just a normal winter when I grew up in the '60's. That little town is like a snapshot of the past, not much has changed but the car models. It is a pretty main street. Here is the library that is located dead center on Main Street.

Good afternoon from Wisconsin. ++9f degrees at noon(1 minute ago) with the wind chill at -8. No snow though received in the last 10 days. The airport about 12 miles north of us says there is 16" of snow cover still on the ground.

My shopping list yesterday at the LHS was completed plus a couple things not needed somehow jumped into the basket! Adhesives I was planning to stop at Home Depot for but life got in the way. With all sorts of medical appointments this afternoon I might just buy online tonight. It's a re-supply so the timing is not crucial.

Stay safe, stay warm

Good evening to anyone looking in this late. Just got in from putting another 0.8 engine hours on the tractor (over 2 hours wall clock) in the dark.

After a roughly 18" fall, our Town plow contractor had the roads barely two cars wide this morning. Late today he got worried about next weekend's forecast.  His trucks came around "winging back" after sunset and did a thorough job of filling in all three of my driveways. Just what I ran the 7' snowblower along 1000' of road shoulder hoping to avoid. He came back and offered to fix it, but I said I'd take care of it myself. I added if he sees I've shaved the banks, but haven't left it so he can just pick up his wing, tell me how.

Good Morning All,

Today for breakfast is coffee, lots of coffee, cereal, bagels, toaster waffles, yogurt, OJ, and soda. Did I mention coffee?

Slept very poorly last night and up early because I could here the animals getting into stuff they shouldn't be. >:( Of course once I was up they were like a cloud of mosquitoes around my feet until I fed them.

Yesterday I met up with Terry and did the money and kit under the table exchange. ;)  We had coffee, split a very good cookie and BS'ed..er, I mean socialized for about an hour before going our separate ways.

Today I planned to start the build thread, but I discovered Dad needs to go to the DMV to deliver some paperwork. The only way I'm sure it will get done is if I go with him, so... He has a appointment late morning. I will probably do floors before it then afterwards do my walk since the feel like temp is 34F this morning and too damn cold. Sunday and Monday the actual temps are supposed to be in the 20's. :o  :o The guessers are saying they will be the coldest mornings in 14 years.

Anyhoo,

I hope everyone has a good day.

We're having a tropical heat wave in lower MI, 11o headed to a high way up there at 140 and more of that white mess falling out of the sky.  Wind will help stir the mess.  Drivers West of us played dodgem cars on the expressway again yesterday near GrdRapids and elsewhere.

I also had a poor night, awoke at 0400 after some sort of jarring mental exercise in my sleep and an inability to regain the Zzzz's that came to a sudden halt...then got congested  :-[ laid there for a while then exercised my senior card and got up.  iWatch needed an update and was jiggling and I just sat down to look online...  :-*

I'm getting real tired of YOO-TooB inserting nasty ads in the videos, women talking in the coarsest language :o  about their old guy(50+ old?) rocking them til their legs were shaking...good for you honey now get off my porch...let me continue my train video... ::) If at age 50 my lady de-jour talked like that SHE would need a good washing out of her mouth with soap, then a ride home...

Worked on the layout a bit yesterday, managed to draw blood within 2 minutes :o ...got that out of the way early ;)  and then made some progress(well, lots of sawdust) on my project. Yes, a sawzall was involved, (not in the blood letting) as well as other power tools.  The power UNscrewdriver is what bit me.

The 3d machine made a couple things yesterday, as well.

Today? Hmm, back at the layout.

KS geesh it's early.

Good morning everyone.

30 now in Toomsuba, MS, sunny and 50 later.

Curt, thanks for the coffee and breakfast and have fun with the new kit.
Hope the VA visit goes smoothly.

Van got finished around 12:30.
There was a very small leak at the fan and water fried the electronics.
The fan works perfectly again.
Headed west afterwards and made to just over the border into Mississippi.
I'll drive an hour west today and do a hike with Star.

ACLTom, yesterday's picture was one tree that was heavily damaged by fire.
What's in the photo is pretty much all that was left of it.
What looks like a burnt building is part of the tree.

Sorry, no picture today.

Hope all are well and have a great day.

Quote from: jbvb on January 27, 2026, 10:35:35 PMLate today he got worried about next weekend's forecast.
There's discussion on the national level of a 'bomb cyclone', but the two weather sources I use, Apple's Weather.app (which correctly predicted heavy snow for Springfield Sunday from the start of their 10 day window) and Weather Underground, both show minimal snow on Sunday.  We'll see...  11 years ago, the storm on Springfield Sunday was the start of Snowmaggedon where it pretty much snowed for the next 30 days.

Anyway...  I thought I had an open day today, but I have to pick up my wife after she drops her car off for service.  No big deal, but it does break up the time.  Goal for today is to paint the barn walls, I'm after a weathered whitewash look.

Good morning folks,

Curt, thanks for the coffee and breakfast. Good luck with the 1:1 stuff.

Karl, hope your sleeping improves.  That sawdust is good for absorbing blood on the layout...

Rick, safe travels to Star and you.  Congrats on the van fix.

Larry, wishing you a warm day up there.

Terry, yesterday sounds perfect to me.

Dave, good luck painting the barn.

What's on your agenda?

It's a hazy morning and cold at 28°F.  I'll be glad when January and February are over.

Yesterday at the bench, I put another layer of paint on the sheriff's office.  Today, the plan is to drybrush with several colors and apply pigments.

Have fun,
mike

Morning everyone

Curt thanks for the coffee and breakfast.
Have fun with the kit.

Making this short today I have shoveling to do again!!
At my age it takes a long time to move snow.

I still need to post the picture I know.
Later today I promise.   ;)

Everyone have a great day!!  :)

Morning all,

Not much to add this morning. Lots of errands to run with Pam, maybe some bench time later.

Have a safe and warm day everyone.

Good morning Curt, Karl, Rick, Larry, Terry, Dave, Mike, Jerry, ACLTom and the rest of the crew that drops in later.

Thanks for the coffee and breakfast Curt, have fun at the DMV.  ;D  Looking forward to your next build thread.

Karl, sounds like you had a busy and productive day yesterday.  Have fun on the layout today.

Rick Safe driving and enjoy the hike with Star.

Larry, enjoy your day.

Terry, glad you had a great visit BS'ing with Curt.

Dave, have fun painting the barn, weathered whitewash is not a look we see very often here.

Mike, Have fun at the bench today.

Jerry, Picture later today? I'm going to hold you to it.  ;D  Be careful shoveling the white stuff.

ACLTom, hope you make it to the bench after all the errands are done.

Current temperature is -16c (3f) and blue skies but it's supposed to get cloudy later today.  The drive home last night was later than usual so by the time we ate and cleaned up it was almost bed time, so no bench time.  I think I'm going to take a couple of days away from the bench, just to have a break and spend some time on my other hobbies.

Have a great day everyone.
