Hey Der Folks!

My entry for the 2021 Winter Build Challenge is Blair Line - Blairstown General Store. I will be building this kit has "Aiden's Hardware" dedicated to my Grandson. This my first time building a "Tab and Slot" type kit.

Kit Building / Third Kit - Sigmon Used Cars by FOS
September 08, 2020, 07:17:42 AM
Hey Der Folks!

For my third build, I will be doing Sigmon Used Cars by FOS. This is my first build with multiple structures, that you have to to put together to make one structure. This kit also has all laser cut windows and doors, and not the usual plastic Tichey Parts, which is also a first for me. I will also try to do some videos of the build (but can't guarantee it). It will not be a How-To, but more of a build log.

Hey Der Folks,

Can anyone point me to some tutorials, or share how you make foundations? Do you always add foundations to your builds?  The first kit I built (J. Keen Supplies) had a foundation included. My current 2nd build, Foley Towing did not include a foundation in the kit.

NOTE: This kit has garage doors, and I do plan on a small diorama.

Thank You in advance for your input,

Hey Der Folks!

For my second build, I will be doing Foley Towing by RailRoad Kits. (I wanted to build a kit from another manufacture) but I am waiting for the orders to be shipped.

I chose this kit for the reasons below:

  • It's not a basic square kit, it has a little more complexity to it

  • It uses shingles, I watched Jason Jensens tutorial, and I wanted to try something other than rolled roofing (I know I can use shingles on any kit, but these were included with this kit)

  • It's not a clapboard siding kit
I am looking forward to this build, has it will be my first kit following only paper instructions.  My first build had a DVD to follow along with, which was a big help.  I did some testing of different colors, if anyone would like to give some feedback.  I am leaning toward "Pale Green" has my choice, but I am open to any ideas.

Kit Building / New Kit for a Future Build
July 20, 2020, 08:00:12 AM
Hey  Der Folks!

Received my kit for the HOScaleCustoms Podcast group build in August.  It's from RailRoadKits, also included is a free "grab bag" of cast detail parts.  I have to build a couple "basic kits" before I attempt this one LOL.

Kit Building / Suggestions For Second Build
July 16, 2020, 07:42:04 AM
Hey Der Folks!

Now that I am wrapping up on my first build, I am looking for suggestions from you fine folks for my second build. I currently have Foley Hookers Towing and Wolf's Gas and Oil in the stash. However, I would like a go at a kit from another manufacture.  Let me know your suggestions from another manufacture, that might be a good for my 2nd build.

I appreciate your suggestions,

Hey Der Folks!

I am curious if there is a difference in the result one would get using "generic" craft store chalks vs Pan Pastel Brand?  I see a lot of references to those little containers of Pan Pastel brand for weathering, which a little more pricey (which is fine) if the results are much better, and easier to use than basic pastels.  I currently have the Doc O'Briens weathering powders set, but have not gotten the results I like, plus there is not much of a variety in colors.

Thank You in Advance,

Modeling: Signage / Backing for "Metal" Signs?
June 15, 2020, 02:13:07 PM
Hey Der Folks!

I am working on my first craftsman kit J. Keen Supplies. The kit came with assorted little signs. I am wondering what type of backing do you use on these to replicate a metal sign?  I seen a tutorial that used an aluminum can when making street signs, but I think that might be to thick for a wall sign.  I know how to do the "painted on' look, but unsure of how to create a metal looking sign.

Thank You in Advance,

Hey Der Folks,

Wish me luck, on my first Craftsman Kit build. It'll be slow going I'm sure, but I will post updates has I work on the kit. I do plan on setting the completed kit on a small diorama.

Kit Building / Kit Question
May 13, 2020, 12:51:02 PM
Hey Der Folks,

I hope this is OK to ask, I am looking for some opinions on JL Innovative Design Kits.  I am new to building wood kits, and have the opportunity to get a couple of these kits in a trade.  I have a few "starter" kits from RailroadKits and FOS that I will be starting, and the JL kits will be in the stash until I build a few basic kits.

Thank You in Advance,

-Steven
