Good morning everyone.

Partly cloudy and a high of 68 in Oregon today.

Just wrote my usual morning post and it flew into the ether never to be seen again.

Next person in can make breakfast.

Star and I will hike later.

Have a great day everyone.

Quote from: KentuckySouthern on April 24, 2025, 08:04:27 PMMy first computer science class was Fortran at Michigan State using punch cards and such writing little programs "2+2=x" punching a couple dozen cards, trekking halfway across campus to the mainframe, giving them your bundle of cards. 2-3 days later you picked them up and a bundle of green/white paper and see if you guessed right...so tedious.  I did manage to get enough of a grip to pass but I Never stuck with it. My mind locks up like a n old 3 speed Chevy stick shift when engaged in number oriented action :o :o
It's definitely a generational thing!  In my first serious programming course (fall of 76, FORTRAN), we had printing terminals and text editors to write the code, and then submitted it on-line.  But we still had to pick up (and debug) the printouts.

The only time I had to punch cards was to test a card reader hooked up to one of the computers I had in the Army.

Morning everyone

Coffee is on.  And water for the tea guys and OJ and soda in the fridge.
Eggs anyway you want them.  Sides of bacon, sausage & home fries.  Toast or English muffins.

Morning Rick.

Karl & Dave to much computer stuff.  I just turn it on and that's enough.

I'll be back later.

G morning, Thanks for the breakfast Jerry! I hear ya Rick, the thread vanishing act happens to me a lot.  Fixed that chord yet Mike? K9's and Dave's conversation is about CS is 4 paygrades over my comprehension.  8)

Raining today and pretty much caught up with the delayed yardwork. I'll concentrate on inside today. Have a good en!

Good morning Karl, Rick, Dave, Jerry, Philip and the rest of the crew that drops in later.

Thanks for the coffee and breakfast Jerry,

Karl, Dave, the first ever computer course I took was Fortran in College where we had to the punch card thing, those were the days.  ;D ;D

Rick, losing posts into the either has happened to me to.  When that happens I press the back key a couple of times and I can usually get the post back.  Enjoy your hike today with Star.

Philip, have a great day.

Currently 11C (52F) and sunny.  Got back a little while ago from dropping off the Mrs car to get new summer tires.  This afternoon will be a trip to Ikea to get new bedroom furniture for the grandson, should be fun.  Tomorrow morning is the local NMRA division meet, so will be spending the morning attending that.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning everyone, weather in Cheyenne this morning......34f with a wet drizzly cloudy sky. Forcast to get all the way up to 38. But no wind at this time so that part is good. Supposed to warm back up in the 60s tomorrow.

Days are starting to get noticeably longer recently. I leave my house for the drive up to Cheyenne at 5am. Now half that 45 minute drive it is dawn. It won't be long I will have daylight for the entire drive. I can't wait, I love long says and summer!!

Morning all,

Thanks for breakfast Jerry.

When I was at UF, there was no CS of any kind. That should tell you what I know.

Yesterday Pam ran my A** all over the place. I think we stopped at 10-12 different places to get what she wanted or wanted to look at. We had a very late lunch and when I got home I was to pooped to do anything forum or bench related.

I was going to cut the grass today but not in the mood for that either.

The past few days, I've been digging deep under the layout and found two kits I completely forgot I had. One was a kit of the Buzzard Bay Tower. I have one on the layout that is cast in Hydrocal. This one is cast resin and will get built later this summer.

The other kit I retrieved from the depths is a Sylvan kit. This is not a vehicle kit but one dedicated to Irv Schultz. This one is a polyurethane resin kit. It will also get built later this summer.

Have a safe and happy day everyone.

Good morning from Wisconsin. High today will be about 20 degrees less than the nice 74 we hit yesterday. 70's return on Saturday!

Fortran, 1st class as a college sophomore in 1971. Boring as all get out to me and after 4 semesters I was done with Computer Science. One of my college roommates became a NASA computer engineer and after the Apollo missions lost his position. It wasn't called a job. He became very rich as a software writer years later and today still consults for a gaming company. He failed our beginning CS classes but stuck with it. Like plastics it was the future.

Not sure what the day will bring but I'll figure it out

Have a great day

TomO, clothes shopping done?

Have a great day everyone.

Rick, I was told I'm not done. I need a sport coat for the rehearsal dinner and something nice for Sunday brunch.

I talked to my brother and he has a place we can get clothes at on Maui. So since I've exhausted  the Madison area stores I am going to wait. Terry's fine but the daughter is unhappy but too bad for her. I kept 4 pair of jeans and 5 no collar shirts and 1 pair of dress shoes. Everything else is new so I'll be the best dressed retiree in my house!

I built Irv's Hardware years ago.  The castings were a bit warped, but I was able to fix that.  It's a great kit, and a great memorial to Irv Schulz, who was a very influential modeler for me.

I also have the Buzzards Bay Tower.  It's a bit modern for my 1890s layout, but since it was a present from my wife, Rule 1 will be invoked.  It's actually sitting on the otherwise unfinished location (where the drop bridge is located).

So once again, I get the pleasure of seeing how you build kits I've built before....

Good Morning,

Gee all this talked about computers is making me feel nostalgic. While I didn't use computers in college I remember those who did with punch cards and that funky green & white printer paper; I remember my Dad looking over that same kind of paper as a warehouse supervisor for Acme Markets grocery chain. My first computer was the Commodore 64.....yup those were the days.

It's a sunny 67 with a high of 74 in New York. Lots of errands earlier and I believe it's "National I Can't Drive Worth A Crap" day; a utility van almost slammed into me on a major road....I guess my reflexes are still ok. Not sure about the rest of the day; maybe some bench time later.

Have a great day!! Be well and stay safe.

Dave,

Happy to hear you have both as well. I'll do a build thread and include both in that one build thread.

Good morning folks,

Karl, so no automatic?  It sounds like your computer experiences were normal in those days.  Now, kids use their phones and do not speak Fortran.

Rick, oops, it must have been caused by sunspots...

Dave, you were lucky to have skipped all those punch card shenanigans.

Jerry, thank you. I was starving.  The coffee is good and the bacon...mmm. Glad they are making headway with the fires.

Philip, congrats on the yardwork.  What lurks on your bench?

Ron, sounds like a significant cash outlay is coming your way.

Dale, there is nothing like those summer days in my book.

TomACL, that much running around would put me in therapy.  Glad you survived.  Those kits look like fun.

TomO, it is amazing how many of us were cursed with Fortran.

Larry, Folks who had the Commodore 64 loved them.

How goes the rest of the crew?

It's an overcast day in Georgia, but warm at 79°F.  Rain is forecast for later.  This morning, I worked on staining wood for the bridge.  I'm ready to cut the cross braces.

Tomorrow, the lodge has a big fundraising event, a car and motorcycle show.  We donate the proceeds to the Georgia Children's Home.  Rain is forecast at 30%, so I hope it rains somewhere else tomorrow.

Have fun,
mike

Good Afternoon,

The illness continues here. I feel slightly better. I got up at 7 am got a shower then went back to bed until 11 am.

We did home Covid tests and they both came back positive. :(

So for the immediate future Kathy and I will quarantine at home.

I hope everyone has a good day.
