Looks great Mike. I think the peaked roof will look better than a flat roof.

Mike, nice job printing the walls and tank.
I have to assume the tank is hollow.
Peaked roof will look great.

Mike, you printed the stone walls with a FDM printer, I'm impressed. That's a lot of detail for a FDM printer.

Ron, thanks.  I have an old, cheap Creality CR-10, and the version of my slicer, Cura, has a superfine mode. The combination seems to do well, although those walls take nine hours each to print.  Have fun, mike

Howdy folks,

Thanks, Curt, Rick, and Ron, for your comments.  I appreciate your recommendation for the peaked roof.  I'll make it a hexagon with cedar shingles.  I don't remember enough trig and geometry to calculate those roof panels, but I'm sure there is a calculator online.

Have fun,
mike

Wow Mike that is really coming along.  Great work on the stone walls and the wooden tank.  A peaked roof for sure.

Howdy folks,

Jerry and Larry, thank you for your comments and support.

This photo shows the tar paper roof, tank rafters, and test-fit paper hex roof resting in place without being glued down.  The tank base rafters are 8"X12".

What are your thoughts about the size of the hex roof? I made a larger version, and it didn't look right.  The sample overhangs the tank and is as wide as the stone base.

Have fun,
mike

I think it sits too tall.  Make the roof flatter and I think you'll like it better.

Rick

Mike, I did a quick search on wooden tanks with peaked roofs and saw many examples of tanks with lower roofs and ones with taller peaks.
You're the one that has to live with it so go with what you think looks best.
The example you show looks good to me.

Howdy folks,

Dave, Rick, Philip, and Curt, I appreciate your comments. The roof in the previous photo was not pressed all the way down, so it did look tall. I calculated the roof angle for 22 degrees, which is normal, I think.

The stones received another coat of paint and some weathering.  The roof received the tank supports.  The tank received two coats of different greens to get the color that matched the maintenance shed and depot.

The side that faces the track.

This side faces the maintenance shed.

There are so many little things remaining to be done.  The tank roof, bands, logo, spout, supporting frame, ladder, door, and window...

Have fun,
mike

The stone color looks very good Mike. Are you planning on aging the green color?

Howdy Curt,

Thanks for your question.

Indeed, I plan to weather the tank something like the maintenance shed with water stains, too. The paint needs to cure a bit more before I start the weathering process.

Have fun,
mike
