Mike, the one thing that was surprised to see was the use of rope.
I guess that's what prototypical for the era.
I would have thought a steel cable would have been used.

Howdy folks,

Dave, thanks for your comment and link.  This oil derrick is rigged for drilling only.  The addition of a tank is in anticipation of an oil strike.

Curt, thanks for your compliment.

Rick, thanks for your continued support. I too was surprised by the use of hemp rope instead of steel.

Rich, thank you for the compliment.

Jerry, thank you for your encouragement.

Larry, thanks.  I hope to have it on the layout soon.

Philip, thank you.  The back stories interlaced with both fiction and non-fiction are making the layout fun to build.

To those just passing through, thanks for taking a moment to watch the oil derrick grow.  A ladder and outhouse are all that remain to be done before it goes on the layout.  An oil tank will follow in a while...

Have fun,
mike

I'm glad your not on a real ladder......omg ;)

Howdy folks,

Kyle, I agree.  It is out of hand.  Thanks for the compliment.

Philip, I wouldn't climb it either.  Thanks for the post.

This draws the construction of the Stoney Creek Oil Derrick to an end.  (Well, mostly.  It still needs to be planted on the layout after the road is finished and the river is cast.)  Here are a few parting shots of the derrick in place.  The layout will be extended near the derrick, so hopefully, no errant elbows will cause a disaster.

Thanks for following this build.  It's been a hoot and informative about oil drilling in the early 1900s.

Have fun,

Mike, that's a contest winning model if I've ever seen one.
Outstanding!

I like everything about this build Mike.
It will look greater once it gets into its permanent location and sceniced around.

Mike just an excellent job on the build; I can almost hear the oil gushing. I especially like the wood pulley.

Mike, could you take one more photo with a scale figure on the platform to give a sense of (prototype) size?
