Howdy folks,

I'm shifting focus from structures and rolling stock to the layout.  I have procrastinated as long as I could, and am finally in the mood.  My OCD took over, so I am starting from the left end of the layout and will work to the right.

First up will be the bridge to the planned mining peninsula (phase 2).  The bridge is the fine wooden Howe Truss from Hunterline. You can't build a good bridge without abutments (well, in my youth I bridged the Rhine River many times without abutments ;) ), so they are the first step.

I started with 2" blue EPS foam and cut the abutments to shape with my new toy.  I have never made anything structurally from foam, so this is a first for me.  It's also a learning experiment, so I would appreciate your comments.

Location for the abutments with blank foam in place.

New toy from Proxxon.  It didn't cost much more than a set of O scale abutments.

First step was to roughen the foam surface with an aluminum foil ball.

Next, I cut horizontal lines with a blade and added vertical lines. I tore random blocks to help depict an abutment built in the 1800s.

The next step was to spray a primer coat of Camouflage Khaki. The paint left a rough surface on the foam which was an added benefit of the primer.

Finally, I washed the abutment with Country Twill craft paint.  That's as far as I got today. Time to rest.  Just one more abutment to do for now.

Have fun,
mike

Looks great. When the paint is applied it will really POP! Nice cutter also Mike!

Rick

Mike, nice looking abutments and congratulations on the new toy.

Howdy folks,

Philip and Rick, thank you for following along.

Today I finished making the 2nd abutment and painted both.

Stones made and a coat of primer on both.

Painted and ready to plant on the layout.

Okay, next up will be staining bridge kit wood and sculptamold...

Have fun,
mike

Well done Mike and the coloring perfect.

Nice little toy you have there.
Looking forward to the bridge.

Howdy folks,

Rick and Jerry, thank you for your kind words.

I started work on the bridge today.  I started with the deck where the rails will go, and will work the chords next.

The box

Kit contents (some hidden by plans) Instruction booklet and two sheets of scale plans.

Bridge Stringers in the clamps after cutting to the correct length, gluing, clamping, aligning, and flattening on plate glass.

So the bridge is now in process.

Have fun,
mike

Howdy folks,

Gregory, thank you for following and commenting.

Today I almost finished the tie and stringer assembly.  Tomorrow I hope to drill the holes and attach the NBWs to every fourth tie.  There are 324 NBWs in the kit.  Man, does my back hurt from hunching over all those ties.  I'm disappointed in my stain mix, so I'll need to go back over the assembly to make it more creosote colored.  The kit is mostly basswood, but the ties are pine for better spike holding.  The pine doesn't soak up the stain like the basswood.

Ties and stringers on the wax paper-covered plans.  This kit is nice!

Have fun,
mike

Jerry

Very nice Mike.  I see your building the 1:64 scale bridge a good choice for ON30.
